Dog encounter..Glad I took the MSF course
«

I was on a small county road this afternoon and was cruising about 35-40 mph. I saw a dog run across a yard and right up to the street ready to intercept me. I slowed down as I approached the dog and then gunned it. I caught it off guard.
I'm glad I paid attention to that portion in the MSF Basic course. [moto]
If I didn't know any better I would have probably tried to speed right past the dog. Probably not a good idea.

they never taught us that.
I googled it, turns out dogs are good at interception. if you slow down and then gun it, it throws them way off.
Gotta write that down. Does it work with deers to? They seem to not have any clue where the make the beast with two backs they are going to end up.

That technique will encourage the deer to jump. Dogs hunt for food (OK, most of our pets don't, but it is their nature to hunt) They often to this by chase and intercept. Deer are food. When they see your bright eyed vehicle coming down the road they see fast, big predator. The deer sees you slow, then speed up. This sets off the danger alarm. The escape technique is to jump in your path and run. Constantly slow down until you pass the deer. Also keep in mind there are usually more than one. The first one is the scout.

I must admit that I didn't remember that little useful factoid from my MSF class (which was awhile ago, granted), but I found the information fascinating when I read it last evening. And then...
Today I played hooky from the office, since it is the day before Thanksgiving and it was 57 here in the Midwest (and that just doesn't happen often this time of the year), and I went out for a ride with a buddy on some of our favorite country roads. Near the end of the ride, I was leading and we came around a bend and what the hell came a'chargin' out from a yard but a big ol' pooch. So remembering this post, I slowed, let the beastie get a bead on me, and then gunned my S4Rs. I looked like Randy Moss juking a rookie cornerback; the dog didn't have a chance, and I like to think I actually saw it's eyes get wide as I went zooming by.
So in short, thanks for this post. Cheers.

Loose dogs, another good use for armoured Sidi's.

So is it more proper to just kick the dog, or try to punt him?

Attempt to show the dog a lesson in interception, extent leg as far as you can and if necessary use brakes or throttle to correct speed.

Please, please try this when I get an Irish Wolfhound. If nothing else, it'd be interesting.

Good job remembering that from MSF! If anyone has forgotten these little pearls from MSF, you can have them in writing. I picked up Proficient Motorcycling by David L. Hough a few months ago and it explained this dog manuever and other tips taught at MSF.
