Before my time, but didn't the 'old' board get bought up by some class A jerks, and everyone fled?

Yes; VS bought it...

I first signed up on the other board (it ranks higher on Google) but I quickly realized that everybody was here.
I never understood what happened though. Anybody care to explain the history?

Ok, since you asked, here's an abbreviated version of the history with links if you want to delve into it.  As much as I don't like to link to TOB, there's no other way to explain it as well.

The DML was bought by a company called Vertical Scope, a for-profit advertising/media company that owns motorcycle.com and has been buying up motorcycle forums to increase their advertising market.  The saga of VS and the DML can be found here and here

DML moderators and members built the DMF as an insurance policy in case VS screwed up the DML.  It sat unused and hidden for many months.  Then the day came.  The mods and admin resigned en masse.  Below--listed by name--are just some of the resignations threads that were easy to find. There are a bunch more.  Some chose to be mods/admin here.  Others are just members.

After everyone resigned, the DMF went live and a few thousand people moved here to set up shop.   waytogo   [moto]  All was well in the world.

P.S.  Kinda weird to read through those old posts.  But someone's gotta explain how this all came about.

If my memory serves me right (seldom does) the member count was explosive here up to ABOUT half of what it is today. I  guess that was the migration period, at least for the most active members?

So, the answer would/could be 1,500 - 2,000 migrated members - my guess Tongue

The stats link from the bottom of the forum homepage

http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?action=stats

seems to agree with you, maybe a little more than 2000 - I'd guess we're getting ~200 new members per month, and that we got ~2300 migrating members over the first 3 or 4 months (probably more, I'd guess we weren't doing as well on google back in May - August, so even more of those signups are likely to be migrants from TOB)

I was on the old board for a while (mainly as a lurker), I tried to stay around after VS took over, I was kinda hoping that things would settle down but once the new VS Admin guys started banning people for petty reason's.
Time to [moto] on over here and start again.

I don't like to talk about it.

I broke the news of the sale to VS. predicted the boards eventual abortion. was called "chicken little," and then was proven right.

I joined the OB when I ordered my Monster...somtime in '05' ?? Might have been '04' as I had originally ordered a S2R but when there were no more coming to the US that year, I ordered an S2R 1000...Anyway.

I never go back to the OB, I went back a few times early on but haven't in ages...Why bother?

I think there is at least a little rebel in every MC rider...no matter the brand, size, etc. This Board was started via rebellion...I like that and can relate and there were and are good reasons for it.

The DML was bought by a company called Vertical Scope, a for-profit advertising/media company that owns motorcycle.com and has been buying up motorcycle forums to increase their advertising market.  The saga of VS and the DML can be found here and here

-The DML was literally a "list" or email list in the beginning. A community of Ducati owners that helped out with tech advice, and rode together. Purchased by Jeff H (monsterparts) and Martin from motowheels. The email list is still active but low on traffic.
-DML goes webboard. Slow at first but then gains popularity and grows monthly.
-Hazy history on how/where Martin parted ways with part ownership.
-DML takes membership donations to "run site and buy needed equipment" for the DML "community".
-Jeff H sells "community" to VS.
-VS sucks, DMF is born.

The DML is a story of good intentions turned to greed.
