Hello,i ride an  04 s4r with 27k kms,it's been running great so far,do i really need a valve adjustment?When do you know you need one?Thanks.

It would be a good idea at that mileage.

The closers are probably pretty loose by now and will pound the keepers to death possibly causing an expensive issue...not that the service isn't pricey on it's own.

not to mention, have you changed the belts out at all in that time?  might want to really think about it...

When do you know you need a valve adjustment?  When you do your scheduled valve inspection and they're not within spec.

That's the point of routine services.

Belts have been changed as scheduled.Thanks for the input,i'm getting my baby in for the service.

They're kilometers, not miles - he's just short of the third scheduled valve clearance check on the old bikes, and a little over the second on a new one. (I think the '04s were still calling for 10,000km/6000mile checks and the 12,000km/7500miles checks turned up for the '07 models)

To the OP, yeah, you should get them checked, especially if you didn't have it done when the belts were changed - if the clearances are out you could be doing potentially expensive damage to the valve gear. There's a good chance you don't actually need an adjustment though, but you'll never know if you don't get it measured up.

27k Kms = 16,777 miles.

1. Check and adjust at 600 mile Service
2. Check and adjust at 6000 mile Service
3. Check and adjust at 12,000 mile Service

Bent Valve, flaking rockers etc are all very bad and very preventable. Glad to hear your bringing her in for Service.

You are probably very right Shocked service isn't cheap.  That said can you really put a price on the time lost between motorcyle and rider during the repair?  I shudder just thinking about it.

All good and old school, and I'll bet you (like me) use the old tighter tolerances as well not the newer sloppier ones. Ducati haven't called for valve clearance checks in the 600 mile service since '98 or earlier though (at least not on old design the 2 valvers - anyone know what the owners manual says on the new motors? the 695s and 696s?)
