This is on a 900ie that's going into a 750ss track bike.  Bought the motor used with unknown mileage.  Everything looks *great* under the valve covers, and the clutch looks normal.

I just drained the oil out of this thing (it looked normal as well) and there was bad stuff stuck to the magnet on the drain plug.  I expected to see some debris on it, but it was covered with what looks like half moon slivers of metal.  Almost like when threads pull out of a tapped hole.

I know I've read about this before, but could find nothing with the search function.

Im heading off to take a picture now.

Help  :'(

It sounds like it may be the oil galley plug backing out.

crank plug shavings are aluminum  .......hmmm aluminum magnet?  lol

probably one of three things.
1. normal gearbox wearing in. Is it a low mile motor?
2. ball bearing failure, a bearing is shedding metal. these usually do not look like thin shavings more like small flakes.
3. alternator nut is loose and washer behind starter clutch is being eaten.

happy hunting

Its on it's way out. Might as well install nitrous.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

Again, mileage is unknown.  The inside of this engine looks great so far btw.
I really don't think this is normal wear for anything.  These slivers are magnetic, and really hard.  I can't bend them with my hands.

Ill check the washer behind the starter clutch.  Im pulling the flywheel and left side gears and taking them to a shop I got access to this Saturday for *extensive* lightening.  [evil]

Also, fwiw the oil screen was 99% clean when I pulled it.  There were 2 flakes of material on it.

Check out the crescents with a magnifying glass to see if the sharp edge is on the inside or outside, i.e. from a bolt or from a threaded hole. Then try and work out what the diameter is, that will narrow down your search a bit.

What happened to the pics?

I don't know why these don't show up.  The url goes right to the pics when I copy paste to the address bar  :-\  No time to fix it now. . .

looks like someone dropped a clip or 2 from inside shims that keeps them on the valves.
They usually wind up on magnet, no worries.

When you link to a pic on a hosting site you can't use the url in the address bar.

You have to right click on the image and 'copy image location' and use that inside the tags.
