I use my phone instead of carrying a laptop for most things.   The inability to edit word docs and resend them would kill it for me.  iphone won't do that?

Out of the box, no. You can read them, but not edit them. There _may_ be app store applications that let you edit them - but. Aybe not, the "rules" for app store developers might not allow them enough access to local storage.

What is it with you lawyer types wanting to edit stuff on your phones? (I know, a billable 15seconds is a billable hour, right? ;-) )

Bingo.

I just know how unreliable our Citrix interface is with our route accounting software vendor. I would prefer to have everything on site and in hand so I can do my own troubleshooting and repair work instead of relying on a third party vendor trying to troubleshoot with a 4th party interface.

Back on topic though, both phones offer alot more than the old phones did. Either one is a very capable piece of equipment that provides functionality that rivals even the web books that are becoming so popular in a package that can fit in your pocket.
Both have advantages and both have drawbacks but both will do everything you need and much more.

AT&T has an exclusive agreement for the iPhone until 2010.  Considering how much revenue it's generating for AT&T, I doubt they're going to be breaking that anytime soon.

Adam

Apple's going through a lawsuit about this exclusive agreement. AT&T has an exclusive lock on them for 5 years (IIRC), while saying they require a minimum of 2 years for service with any new iPhone. The point argued in the lawsuit is that in reality you're bound to AT&T for 5 years (for the early adopters anyway, and assuming Apple does not extend the agreement) since some features of the iPhone only work on AT&T.

How soon do you need the phone?

I'd say wait until MacWorld in the first part of January. While the rumors don't say much on any new phones being announced, Apple might release a big software update for the phone to coincide with the expo. Your purchasing decision may be clearer then.

nah...my billing works differently now...I don't need to do the 1/10 hour thing.

The phone means I can hang out in the bar and get work done without a computer sitting there.   ;D

and keep participating on the DMF.

you can buy a non-discounted/subsidized iphone w/ no contract, though.

_Great!_, So now my contracts are not just being drawn up by cute but distracted twenty-something girl-lawyers in the queue at Starbucks, but also by jaded thirty-something boy-lawyers moderating biker forums while slamming tequilas... It really does improve my understanding of the whole legal system...  [laugh]

holy threadjack, batman.  (but to carry on...)

there is something gratifying about when the rather young attorneys pregnant dog about there not being any professional 'bad boys' left...that they are either intimidated by them being lawyers, they are too bad and keep getting arrested, or they are boring.... when I get to say I'd love to keep listening to their woes, but I have to ride the Duc down to the tattoo place and get some ink done...

hahahahahahah.

sigh...if I knew then what I know now....

it wouldn't be discussing iphone vs. balckberry.

Monstermash

Update!!! I bought the Storm!

But wait.... Not so fast..... Hold the phone (pun intended), there's more to the story!

After spending hours doing research on both phones last night I came to the conclusion that I wanted the iPhone but the Storm made more sense because after all I am already on the Verizon network.

So off to the Verizon store this afternoon to buy my new Blackberry Storm.

All went well and I left the store with my new phone in hand after about 20 minutes or so. As I was walking to my car I decided to change my ring tone so I tap the media button and expected it to open and allow me to change it to something a little louder than the default tone out of the box. It started to open the app but it just locked up and wouldn't do anything. So back to the store I go more than a little pissed off that the phone I owned for all of 12 seconds already has a problem. As I walked into the store I am spotted by the manager who helped my yesterday and answered all of my questions.

I explain to him I just picked up the phone and I am none too happy that there's already a problem. He asks me if my sales person set up my email etc. and I told him yes and he politely explained that it takes a few minutes for eveything to go through so thats the reason for my problem and once it's done everything will be fine. He then takes out the battery to reset the phone and checks to see that I have the latest software installed. It's all good so off I go again.

I change the ringtone without any issues so I'm happy now but there's almost no charge to the battery so I head back to work and plug it in. The phone is on the counter and one of my co-workers sees it and goes crazy. He's telling me how great the thing is and how he can't wait to upgrade his phone so he can get one. He seems to know alot about it so we spend some time discussing the features. One of the things that I thought was pretty cool was the VZ Navigator. VZN does a few cool things like GPS navigation and finding all sorts of stuff like restaurants, car rentals, banks, and shopping. I decided to give it a shot just to see how good it is. I also have a Tom Tom GPS and it doesn't have a lot of POI's in my area so I'm hoping that the Storm will provide me with a better selection.

Ummm...No. In fact, it doesn't even work because I haven't set it up yet. It takes a few minutes to set it up and I try again hoping it will work. It doesn't. I just keep getting an error message stating I don't have this option installed and to check with my service provider. Okey Dokey....

Pick up the phone, dial *611 for customer support and wait on hold for about 20 minutes. I explain I just bought the phone and I'm having a little problem getting the VZN to work and can they help me. It is at this point where things go from bad to worse.

First I'm told that t he VZN is NOT included with my data plan. Hmmmmm....really? Thats strange because the sales person I spoke with yesterday told me that with the data plan ($30 extra on top of my calling plan) I would be able to use all of the functions of the phone with the exception of texting which I'm ok with because I never text. I am assured that it does indeed cost extra but they will be more than happy to give me a free month to try it out. I decline.

At this point I'm considering going back to the store and asking the sales person why they told me everything was included when clearly it isn't. I also plan to ask what else did she forget to inform me of.

I'm a little steamed and the urge to vent gets the best of me so I get in the car and start heading back to the store. I need to return a few calls I missed while I was on hold with customer service so I try to make a call and the phone locks up again. WTF!!!!!!!!!! Out comes the battery to reset it again.

After turning it back on I make another attempt to place a call and a VM comes through. Here's where I lose my make the beast with two backsing mind......

I hit speed dial #1 to call my VM. At the prompt to enter my pin number I look down at the phone to see the keypad isn't visible so I hit the button to bring it up and enter my pin. I then attempt to press "1" to listen to my VM and guess what? The keypad again isn't visible so I have to again hit the button to bring it up. I press "1" and listen to my VM and I see I have to return a call to my buddy and then try to erase the VM by pressing "7" and guess what? Yup, you guessed it, the keypad isn't visible again. So again I have to hit the button to bring it up and then erase the VM.

YOU CANNOT BE make the beast with two backsING SERIOUS?? [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang]

Lets recap shall we?

In order to check my voice mail I have to:
Hit a button to bring up the keypad
Hit speed dial 1
Wait for the voice prompt
Bring up the keypad again
Enter my pin
Wait for the voice prompt to listen to my message
Bring up the keypad again
Enter option 1 to listen to my message
Wait for the voice prompt to erase the message
Bring up the keypad again
Hit 7 to erase or 9 to save.

After all that I still have to return the call to my friend so I end the call to the VM system and attempt to make the call. I'll bet you can't guess what happend next.....

The phone locked up again! [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang]

At this point I pretty much want to kill the make the beast with two backsing moron who invented the software for Blackberrys but I settle for going back to the store and voicing my opinion to the store manager. Of course he tries to get me to pick out another phone etc. but I'm pretty steamed so I'm having none of it. As much as I want to throw the phone at the salesperson I resist and just return the POS.

I pick up my iPhone tomorrow morning. [roll]
I've been wallowing in my own chaotic and insecure delusions.

Hehe

When I played with the Storm in the store I had all sort of problems. Freezing... Turtle slowness, randomly going into the camera mode when in other applications as other people complained about online... etc

I think the Storm might be good in about 6 months of firmware updates but for now I think you are safer with a Iphone since its been around much longer =)

After reading your voice mail challenge, I think you'll be sold on the iPhone's Visual Voicemail.  [thumbsup]

Dangit, in my day the phone was attached to the wall and if we wanted to check our mail at all our hours, we had to walk to the dang mailbox! Sheesh! Kids!
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

Well, you can say one good thing about the Storm...it helped you make up your mind quickly! [thumbsup] [cheeky]
