Risky Business -- Again nothing...
Young Guns -- Unless he had an uncredited cameo, I think you may be thinking of Charlie Sheen...My bad...he did indeed have an uncredited cameo...obviously it was that good since I have seen that movie 100 times and never noticed
Rain Man -- Hoffman carried that movie for me, otherwise Cruise was mediocre
A few Good Men -- Tolerabe performance
Interview With a Vampire -- Definitely could have picked a few other actors who would have been better in the role
Vanilla Sky -- Never saw it
Eyes Wide Shut -- Never saw it
Collateral -- Never saw it
Days of Thunder -- You are joking right?

Is he a good actor? IMHO there are better out there but in the right role he is indeed good. I love Travolta because he is a great actor and isn't a public douchebag about his religious choice while Cruise makes it point to scream SCIENTOLOGY from the highest roof tops. He is no better or different than any otherof the countless religious zealots who try to shove their religion down the throats of the rest of the world.

Its not that he's not a decent actor (just decent), its that his off-screen persona has taken on such enormous proportions that its impossible to seem him as anyone other than Tom Cruise.  Tom Cruise makes friends with samurai, Tom Cruise tries to Kill Hitler, Tom Cruise drives NASCAR, etc.  He has been in some great movies - Risky Business, Rain Man, Collateral, Eyes Wide Shut, Interview With The Vampire, Magnolia, and Vanilla Sky - but they were great despite of him, not because of him; they all had phenomenal direction and/or superb scripts.  Bryan Singer is not a phenomenal director (despite The Usual Suspects, which is a fantastic film, but only because it had such a great script and some great performances), and I already know the story.

Word is they had to spend $60 million on promotion because the public's perception of Cruise is so negative.  That will give this film a budget of around $140.  It will struggle to make half that domestically.  It will do well overseas, and with DVD sales, etc., it will turn a profit.  But when you tie up $140 million+ over 2+ years, you expect to do better than 10% or 20% on your money. 

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is supposedly getting incredible public reception.  Packed, applauding theaters and good word of mouth.
