I guess it seems a bit much for those of you who don't know the situation. The mother raises this kid by herself, goes to work before he leaves for school and comes home 3-4 hours after he gets home from school. There is no one else at home. Other than the 1-2 hours a day that she spends at home with him (doing what, who knows) he has no one to emulate other than kids from school or what he sees on the t.v. Had I told his mom, one of two things could have happened: she could have chewed his ass (like my parents would have done) or told him "you know better than that" and not mention it again. That's IF she believed that it was HER kid that did it in the first place, video or not.

Last I checked the snow isn't anyone's property. Kinda like you leaving a dog bowl out, having it fill with rain, and then complaining someone came and dumped your "property" on the ground. The most you had was a trespass violation but those are only valid after an order from the property owner to stay off the property.

Do you try talking to him first? Alot of these "latch key" kids are just looking for some direction or mentoring. I was a latch key kid. It's not an easy way to grow up.

Let's say I have some wild flowers growing in my yard. I water them, prune them and fertilize them. Then, the same kid comes and stomps all over them. Is that not destruction of property? What about the knit cap, scarf, and gloves that he stomped on and dragged into someone else's yard? The fact is building the snowman was a conscious effort and could be considered "art".

Can ya blame the kid? Hell, if I lived somewhere there was that much cold and snow...and my new neighbor from sunny ass Arizona kept building a f**king snowman...just to rub it in...I'd give that thing the People's Elbow too!!  >:(

:-*  [cheeky]

[laugh]

You should have got the poop idea before you called the cops..or..

you could have been waiting and pulled your gun out on him.

Either way..it would have ended in a sh*tty mess.   [laugh]

I don't own a gun. Plus in CT, you need to have a special permit just to take the gun out of your house...

So maybe it sucks to be a child of a single mom...

or maybe it just sucks to be a child 40 years after you were.

I'm not saying the kid should walk away.

You could have handled it differently...

with better results IMO.

I'm surprised at how many people are shocked about the cops being called. Did you miss when Chris said that this was the fourthtime?! Clearly this kids has no respect or concept of other peoples property. I'm all for talking to the kids mom...when it would make a difference. These days it takes a run-in with the Man or some type of Big Brothers program. Right vs. wrong is not being taught or enforced by many parents today. This kid is painfully bored. If someone doesn't show him the light now it could get worse.

I'm with you - the kid trespassed.  Regardless of what's required of a property owner to make that a crime (and I don't think ANYTHING should be required - if you're on my property without my permission, its trespassing IMO).  But personally, I would have tried talking to the mother first before I called the police.  If the problem persisted, then I'd make the call.

Build snowman around bricks, pour water over, let him have fun.

If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

I bet I know what single Mom is doing the 1-2 hours a day she is home with her son. Probably feeding him, doing his laundry, cleaning up after him, helping him with his homework, paying her bills, doing her laundry, buying groceries, etc, etc, etc.

You said it yourself, he needs someone to emulate. A stern discussion with him followed by a "come over sometime and I'll show you how to work on bikes" or whatever would have went alot farther in making his and your life living near each other more agreeable. I have about five people in my life that I credit with helping me "find my way". A few of the five did not spend much time with me but the time spent was valuable. So no, you don't have to neglect your kid to have a positive impact on the neighbor kid.

RE: Your wildflowers. An argument could be made that they are part of your landscaping so yes they could be property. Vandalism in CA is coupled with a dollar value (I'm not sure how they do it where you live) and higher values are actually felonies. So with your flowers or your snow you still wouldn't meet the required value of 1 cent to get me to do anything about it.  :)
