I'm getting ready to order a VDST from Desmo times for my 07 S4RS. According the the chart on the order page an S4RS could have either the 59M or the 5AM ECU. how do I know which one I have.  To make matters more complicated I am running the full Termi System with the DP ECU.

Any Ideas or do I need to go to the dealer on this one.

thanks
Mike

It is the 5AM - I think the difference is the idle stepper motor.  Anyway I have the 5AM version and it works fine with the DP ecu.

Thanks.

The Desmo times says if could be either one for our models. Mine is an 07 but I took delivery of it Sept. of 06, how about you?. Of course I  purchased the DP stuff in the srping of 07 so who knows what I have but odds are it's the same as yours.

thanks

I have an '07 that I got in Aug. of '06.  I got my DP computer in early '07 (edit: DP ecu # 96517706B).  Of all the literature and magazine articles I've read, the only place that says there is a possibility of having the 59M is on the technoresearch site.  Lots of places also mention an '06 S4Rs so maybe in Europe there was an '06 model with the 5.9?

edit edit:  You can contact Giamberto directly at technoresearch.  He is great - the service is first class and he will answer any questions you might have about the VDST.  He has worked with me - above and beyond the call of duty - that level of service is rare.

Thanks guys,

I ended up ordering the VDST for the 5AM ECU.  LT of DesmoTimes says that the software will work for both ECUs but there may be some features that are different. I should have it in hand in a couple of days so I'll know soon enough. My Cousin has an 02 998 that I think has the 59M ECU and we plan to try the VDST on both bikes.

A quick search for an exhaust gas analyzer turned up one from Norther Tool supply for around $250.00.  Any better choices?

thanks again for the help.

so, does the VDST for the 5AM ecu work for a 59M ecu then?  i recently had my ecu flashed to the DP ecu by desmo porche, and was trying to reset the TPS using a borrowed VDST from a friend that had his for his 1098 (5AM).  after several attempts over about 45 minutes i decided to give it a rest for tonight and see if anyone has FHE with this.  perhaps i'll just end up having to speak to technoresearch.  it seems to connect, sort of...but displays 5AM in the software.  i got it to give me a "PASSED" once for the TPS, but the calibrate section didn't "ungrey" and was still unavailable.  any advice is appreciated..   :-\

I think there's the 'one model' version of the VDST and the 'all model' version.
Price difference of course...

Do you have the engine running while you are doing this?

the guy i borrowed it from says that he's used it on monsters, multistrada, hyper, and his 1098... all without issues.

The error message "ECU/ECM not responding" is what I get when the engine is not running.  I don't think the two will establish communications unless the engine is running - then press the green/blue ?yin/yang? symbol.  Maybe once they are talking you can turn the engine - but not the ignition off?  I guess you don't want the engine hitting redline when you are setting/monitoring the TPS - it has been a while since I've fooled with mine.

Aha!  This may be part of the problem.  If you turn on the ignition but don't start the engine the ECU goes to sleep after a short while and there's no way to connect.

Do this:
-turn on ignition key
-turn on engine kill switch
-start engine and let it run a few seconds
-kill engine with the kill switch, NOT THE KEY!
-leave the key ON

Then try to connect.  Once you start the engine the ECU won't go to sleep even if the engine stops running.  You may still have compatibility problems but I hope this helps.

FWIW I have the engine off with the key on when I rest the TPS. Sometimes for a reason unknown to me the VSDT will say that I havea 5AM and others it will say I have a 59M. The 07sr4s could have either one (least that's what I was told) but I think mine is the 59M. The only problem I've ever had with the VDST is that sometimes it's very slow to connect when you go from one fuctin to another.

It should be , key on/engine off to reset the tps and engine running to change the trimmer settings

I was told that the mythical '06 s4rs could have the 59.  My 07 s4rs has the 5AM.

You need the key and kill switch on for it to connect, sometimes it can be a bit finicky.
