It's not an exact science.

I liken welding to painting...you are controlling a liquid puddle in both cases.

Sometimes it's difficult to do.

I know what you mean. I just tend to be really critical of my work. Stuff always sticks together but I try hard to get a uniform bead. Sometimes it's tough. My equipment from the 60's works well enough but I think any of the new machines would make me look like a god.

Couldn't tell you.  I suspect there are only a couple companies that do it and supply everyone else.  Most, if not all, of that stuff wouldn't have been a problem once oil got in there and sloshed around.

Owner will go about 500 miles and then we're changing all the fluids in the car (except brake, and antifreeze)

Trick aluminum fly wheel with steel clutch face.  It weighs like nothing Smiley













All bolted up






We had to use a different year bell housing to match this trans up with the back of the block.  One difference we discovered was in the area of the clutch fork pivot stud.  On the new BH there it was mounted to a boss that stuck out 5/8" more than stock and left no room for the fork to work.

Solution = remove 5/8 from the middle of the stud, reweld the head to the threaded body.  I wish I got an after shot but forgot about it.  We were excited to get the trans on the back of the motor.

This was when we discovered a MAJOR problem with the install.

We got a lesson in physics.  Somehow, the carb adapter was unable to occupy the same space as the strut tower Sad



It didn't take long to figure out a fix.  The owner had 2 Weber DCOE side draft carbs that were originally intended for the old 2.0 but never made it on there.  Some quick research with the VW guys and my junkyard turbo yahoo list confirmed that ONE of these carbs would run the whole motor.

Seems that one of them would also run a 5.0L I6 ford 6cyl with a turbo.  If it would do that, it would work for us.

I designed a new manifold, took lots of pics and measurements.  We sent it all of to LC Engineering (they provided the motor) and they fabricated up what we needed Cheesy







And here's the result:

I love Celicas.  I still have my '91 with 220k miles on it.  It received new paint last spring to bring it back to its rightful glory.  I still keep my eyes open for a '91-'93 turbo Altrac. bow down

We moved the radio out of it's stock location to make room for a gage panel.  I designed this one out of thin cardboard then had 2pcs cut out on a water jet.  The operator screwed up and made the holes too big.  He fixed that and made 2 good ones.

It wasn't until later that i discovered that the 2 bad ones fit right over the gage bezels perfectly.  We're running 3 plates stacked.  The first one the gages fit into, the 2nd two are just there to give it a flush look.  Think frenched, but only about half way.  There's about half the height of the bezel revealed.  It's a really cool look, IMO.












The dash has a tach and spedo, and off to the right there are 3 circular "windows" angled at the driver.  One had an analog clock in it, the other was warning lights for oil and water temp, and I don't recall what the third one did.

They *begged* to have gages put in them.

And that's what I did Cheesy

The clock cup wasn't deep enough for a gage, so I cut the back off and extended it back with some sheet metal.






The other 2 original gages (looks like they were actually for water and fuel)




Modified housing (nothing like cutting up 70's material that can't be easily replaced)










After all that, we were almost required by Hot Rod law to replace the tach and spedo as well.
