Privateer... I've been looking at that setup, too.
A) What kind of helmet do you have?
B) How does that setup work in regards to wind/road noise with the music going?
helmet - HJC AC12
I wear earplugs if I'm going to be on the highway and even at highway speed I can hear the music just fine. I have to turn it up, of course, but it's fine. The phone can player louder than the headphones like, so I don't turn it up too much. Even with the earphones the volume is sufficient. If I'm just around town, there are no issues with volume or wind noise.
The HJC does have a weird high pitch wind noise that comes and goes depending what jacket I'm wearing, if I have a neck warmer on, if I'm wearing backpack, sometimes just the angle of the helmet. I haven't quite figured it out, but it has something to do with the neck roll on the back right. If I make an air dam with my hand under my right law/ear area, the noise goes away. it's very odd because my old ac12 didn't do this.

Cheap and effective..
70% isolation and surprisingly good sound
Totally comfortable for hours...because they are short...they don't even touch the helmet

I had some custom made ear plugs made that I hook into to my...satellite radio to listen to while riding. Doesn't seem to really affect me as I pay attention to the road; looking in the mirrors a lot and being aware of my surroundings. As long as it is not turned up full blast, I don't feel it is a distraction.

I've tried riding with my Ipod going, but it seems to mess with my timing going into turns. I tend to go in too hot, so I quit doing that. And in CA, you can have one earphone in, but not both.

In moderate to heavy traffic, never. On quiet roads, occasionally.

I've killed 3 pairs of headphones somehow. The wire for the right bud always seems to get pulled too much and causes the right bud to die. I finally just cut it off so now I'm legal. Having music in only one ear is an odd feeling at first. Throws off the senses. Even though it's not legal I feel that it is much safer to have either both in or both out.

I bought some cheapo helmet speakers that I fitted into my helmet ( a new arai corsair V). I then wear regular old earplugs, so I can hear traffic and sirens. The music is plenty loud, but in the background. I bluetooth to my Zumo 550 GPS/MP3 for tunes and directions. Works fantastic.
I don't bother for the daily riding, and just tuck the small speaker plug into my helmet.

I don't usually bother with music unless I'll be riding for more than an hour or so. Actually, I find it helps my concentration. A couple of weeks ago, three of us went on a day trip through the mountains, and I was asked if riding with music didn't distract me.
OTOH, I won't ride with music in traffic. Too easy to miss something and get squashed.
