Morning

Have a question for the group:
Our home has a two-car carport with a deck on top. Built 2-3 years ago. I-beam construction for the vertical supports & cross beams. Some sort of sheet metal over that with plastic faux wood boards glued (?) on top of the sheet metal.

Ok, here’s the question: There’s rusty patches on the underside of the sheet metal and it drips from there when wet. What drips down, however, is very corrosive. Like, take the wax & clear coat within an hour.  I’m thinking the water is reacting with the sheet metal and forming an acidic or basic solution of some kind.

We’ve got to remove the faux wood and at the minimum seal up the sheet metal this summer.

Thanks for spending time in your heads on this. I’m baffled.

I’m at a loss, truly.  Some low-cost steel based metal with some other alloys in it, if I had to guess.

We’ll also be double checking it has proper slope for drainage. No idea how much it cost to build or who did it, but I could maybe find that out…. Hmmmm

One more possible clue:
There’s a tiny white stalactite hanging from the worst spot for dripping. Maybe 1/2” long.

If the deck above is flat/level, and the faux boards are glued to the metal, is there any pitch at all?

Morning.

Big ship hit the bridge in Baltimore.

I wonder if my buddy was driving it?

I'm beat. Five weeks to go.

Zincalume sheeting is most commonly used in Australia for this kinda roofing these days......

"Galvanized steel is coated with almost 100% zinc while ZINCALUME® steel is coated with an alloy of approximately 55% Aluminium, 43.5% zinc and 1.5% silicon"

"Hard" water will leave calcified limescale deposits..... and interestingly there's this...

"Hard water is usually defined as water, which contains a high concentration of calcium and magnesium ions. However, hardness can be caused by several other dissolved metals; those forms divalent or multivalent cations, including aluminum, barium, strontium, iron, zinc, and manganese"

So my guess is that water collecting on the roof material and seeping down thru holes within.... is reacting with the deteriorating zinc coating of the metal roofing material.

But what to do about it is the question....  I like what Howie said.

Not to make light of a terrible situation, but was anyone driving it?

Morning!

Finally had a positive movement on the job front.  Lots of bots pitching my resume to the side (working on that).  Heard back from Royal-Enfield this morning.  Fingers crossed.

My wife says there’s a pitch to the floor. I don’t see it, at all. Have yet to measure though.

The sheet metal is bright silver, but not shiny. Zinc was my first thought but how rain water can go from water to something corrosive is what’s weird to me. I wasn’t any good in chemistry…

I’ll look into Zincalume Ung. If it’s cheap, it’s probably widely used in Portugal. Thanks!

Is there possibly something in the adhesive for the flooring that's adding to the confusion?

Another good thought!

No idea currently. I won’t be back there for two weeks. (It’s our vacation home.)

I am willing to come investigate the situation for as long as it takes Stu!

I'll just force myself to hang out in Portugal until a solution is found.  Grin

The moment you realize you're a make the beast with two backsing idiot...

So...you buy something online. The payment choices are personal check, or money order. You decide on a personal check because money orders cost...money.

You mail off your check...it's only going to North Carolina, so you use regular mail. Almost a week later, and the check hasn't hit you bank, so you send off an email to ask if the check was received.

The next day you get a call...yeah, we received your check, but you post dated it and the bank kicked it out.

Pay close attention to the make the beast with two backsing month. April 19th is not the same as March 19th.
