...when the comedian killed the pregnant vietnamese girl?

Yeah...also, when the comedian was about to rape Silk Spectre.  A couple of the torture scenes, as well.

it's kinda hard to "get" the comedian unless you show how really make the beast with two backsed in the head he was.

I can see that; although, I would guess that one would benefit from reading the comic in understanding what they were trying to show through the comedian.

like i said, they cut a lot out. in the book, you get some more on the minutemen, better back stories on the "current heroes" instead of just snippets of nite owl ii, silk spectre ii, rorschach, manhattan, and the brief glimpse of the comedian's career.

thinking back, i seem to remember that each issue was kind of like an episode of lost, where it would "focus" around a specific character, their backstory, and how they interrelate into the grand scheme of the story.

there was also supposed to be a "prequel" series called the minutemen that really dove into the backstory of how we got to the beginning of the watchmen, but it got lost in the dispute between moore and dc.

All the characters are substantially flawed. That's one of the things I like about Alan Moore's work. Nobody's a goody-goody.

Wow, I'm surprised at all the negative reviews. I thought the movie was awesome and enjoyed it so much I was shocked when we walked out and realized it was 3 hrs long!

Of course, I never did read the comic though but my bf had and he seemed to enjoy it just as much. I suppose you have to have a solidly dark sense of humor to really appreciate it though. It's a lot of brutal irony to take and then most people still want their heroes to be cut and dry good guys whereas I really enjoyed the complexity of moral dilemma in the characters. rorschach is the awesomeness. Don't really think you need to have read the comic to understand the comedian and appreciate the character but I guess it's nice to know that some people's lives have actually been so pleasantly black and white that they can't get a character like that. Then again, my bf and I were distinctly the only two people laughing through a lot of the film, so maybe we're just weird.

I did have one problem with the movie: wtf was up with the soundtrack?!?! It was so awesome and then boom, died at the end. How do you open with Bob Dylan and close with...well, whatever the make the beast with two backs that song was? That pissed me off.

I might also mention we had a lot of good beer in the theatre and that makes any movie better.

I saw it, I wrote  a brief review on my blog -
http://turkeybollocks.blogspot.com/2009/03/capsule-review-watchmen-movie.html

I enjoyed it, but it's not Oscar material by any stretch. It sticks to the original to a fault, right down to the terse dialogue and convuluted plot (what comic DOESN'T have a convoluted plot?). If you enjoyed the comic, you'll enjoy the movie. If you didn't, you won't. If you never read the comic, god help you, because you will be lost in a hurry.

I watched teh watchmen the other day.

I give it two thumbs up.   [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

IZ

I just saw it.  I never heard of the series and didn't really want to go see it tonight but the s/o likes sci-fi/action flicks.  I was turning in my seat after a couple hours but I wasn't complaining too much.  Rorschach's character, his brutal tactics and Jupiter's body kept me awake.   [evil]  It wasn't too bad!

Now Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach) I think is on the borderline for deserving a Oscar Nod....

Jackie was great in this movie!  The prison scenes.. .. ..  [laugh]
His perverted character in Little Children had me looking over my shoulder at night for awhile!  :-[
I hadn't seen him since Bad News Bears and that movie where he and Tom Cruise went to Tijuana to get some Spanish fly.  [laugh]

Looked up his movie roles/credits and saw that he was believed to be playing Freddie Krueger in the upcoming remake?!
This was appparently just a rumor but I could see him playing that role after Little Children!!

Still haven't seen it, but it seems like they kept all of his good dialog from the GN  [evil]

Where in the world did that come from and please tell me it's not real ?  [laugh]

Even as it is, I can see Alan Moore angrily storming through his dungeon/house/secret lair searching for the ingredient to the full on life ending curse he's going to lay on the creator  [laugh]

I know I'm weighing in kinda late, and I probably don't have a whole lot of fresh material, but hey, it's the internet!

I saw it last weekend, and went in expecting very little.  I looooved the book; one of the best things i've ever read, with or without pictures.  I never thought it could make a great movie; the subtexts and side stories are just too important to the overall feel of the book.  Given that, I thought it was.... ok.

Casting was decent.  Yes, they seem dead on the screen at times, but I think that was at least partially intended due to the darkness of the story.  There is just no way to convey the overwhelming depression of the people in this alternate 80's via the screen.

Effects were fine, but needlessly gory.  I don't know what was up with that.  The book was violent, but this was just bloody.

I'd say it was about as good as it could have been, and it simply couldn't be great.   I'd recommend it to someone at the dollar theater.

On the other hand, the Saturday Cartoon looks AWESOME!  [cheeky]
