Hallo's!

I am about to get a first bike. A Ducati M400 DARK 2001.

Maybe.

Can anyone tell me the difference between a Dark and the regular Monsters?

...And does anyone know if this model has the pillion passengers seat? I can't tell from the pictures.

Thanks for any info!

the dark model features black magic and can go back in time. (no)
yes it has a passenger seat its part of the regular seat, just covered.

2nd, what country you from? there arent many m400s in the US.

Oh and welcome aboard!

Not too sure about the 400s, since they aren't sold in the states, but I don't think there is any difference between the "dark" models except for the paint.

Yes, the bike has a spot for the passenger as well as passenger pegs.

HeMan beat me to it  [thumbsup]

The dark is akin to the base models.  They didn't have some of the flash bits 'normal' models of the same displacement did.  For instance, a dark 620 had the handle bar clamp molded into the top triple and didn't come with the seat cowl or bikini headlight fairing and of course no clear coat on the paint.  So no huge differences, just a few minor ones.

-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

Thanks for the replies/info!

If it could go back in time, i'd go get it now and live out the rest of my life like a Jethro Tull song!

So it sounds like i'd be (slightly) better off getting a normal Monster? I just love the look of the Dark.

I'm in New Zealand. Don't laugh.

the handle bar clamp is actually unverisal to several monsters not just the darks. I think the one you are looking at comes with the cowl since you coudlnt see the seat and the headlight fairing is taken off by most people so i wouldnt worry about that. If you love the look of the dark, then go for it!

Thanks.

I don't need much encouragement, but you're helping. Haha

This is the bike i'm talking of:

also didn't have rubber on the foot-pegs

*shifty eyes* someone's been reporting bad news-->Fry-Cycles to offer baked, broiled & deep fried options as well .....My Little Pony still in style.....House NOT destroyed in motorcycle gang's takeover!.....DMF: where the cool kids hang out........

Duck-Stew

There appears to be NO crash damage on the bike so that's good.

Someone has removed the passenger pegs but they're easy to add back on.

The M400dark doesn't look like it lost much from the regular M400.

If *you* like it.....buy it (providing that's a fair asking price....I have *no* idea of NZ M400 pricing!!!!)

The '01 Monsters had a tachometer and were still carburated (as this one is)

The '01 Monsters did not have the ignition immobilizer (which is a HUGE pain in the ass....) so that's good too...

If the price is fair (again....NO IDEA ON THAT!), buy it...it looks really clean!

Ride safe, and NZ is friggin' beautiful!!!  I was there in '02...  <sigh>

Heathen...I checked out the Monster 400 pics on Trademe.  The bike has a duel seat, but no plastic cover on the rear.  It has the brackets for the rear footrests but no footrest fitted.  You should be able to buy the footrests from http://www.ducatispares.co.nz  They are in Dunedin and should have them.  The 400 is a quite a good bike for a beginner but needs to be reved a bit to get anywhere fast.  A great little commuter or good to cruise on at the legal speed limit. [thumbsup]  If you need any help I live in ChCh and I can be contacted off this list at neddy_nz@slingshot.co.nz

When I went in to buy a Monster, I knew I was leaving with a 620 Dark. Then I saw the S2R Dark. I left with an S2R Dark.  ;D

Buy it if you like it. The only things that would be different... fairing and rear seat cowl... can be bought from the aftermarket.

Enjoy the bike if you pick it up.

Raux

that's a cool bike. ask the owner if he has the passenger pegs. and any other parts he took off.

Heathen

Thanks for the other replies, everyone.

I didn't even notice the missing footpegs! I will ask about the other parts too.

wiggy_nz, i'll hold onto your e-mail address, thanks. And, if I get this bike, that link will probably be handy at some stage!

Duck-Stew, it is nice here. A friend and I plan to do a "world tour" of the country once we both get bikes. I'm gonna LURVE getting back to the South Island...especially on a bike!

Triple J

Darks also only have one brake rotor up front, instead of 2. You can see in the picture.

I don't think that is limited to dark models
