Are the S2R 1k Showas any good?  I guess it's too late now since I already bought them.  Just wondering if they are the same as the S4R.

They come with the crappy progressive springs, but other than that they're the same as the S4R (non Testastretta) forks.

So in theory, if one was to have his 08' S2R 1K's front shocks re-sprung, then he would have decent front suspension

Yes.

Addendum to my previous post:

AFAIK, the valving is a bit different as well, seems a bit better than on the non-S4*.

While limited to test rides, my impressions from Showa forks (S2R1k, 848 and HyperMotard) are very good. They are MUCH better than the crappy, crappy, crappy stock Marzocchi on my S2R800. Changing to the correct rate linear springs will be a good move, I would think....

So JT - does this mean the cartridges are off the table? - and that you will be getting new and better brakes also?  [moto]

My brakes should work just fine with these, right?  I purchased the Showas last night on sleazebay  so they better.

Cartridges for the non adjustable Marzocchis are off the table.  I am going to take my time with these since I have the bike still intact with the old forks.  I would like to have them resprung and whatever else needs to be done to accomodate my 170lb without gear.  I am sure I will be doing lots of research to see what the best bang for the buck options are.  I am in no hurry and I want to do it right.

so these forks are a direct drop in for the s2r800? no shimming/boring required?

The S2R forks also lack the titanium nitride coating of the S4R forks.

Had great results sending mine to GP Suspension in Oregon City, OR.  I found that their OTD price with shipping was comparable and cheaper than all other options, such as Race Tech and Ohlins.  Their process is top notch as well!  Good luck.

After my racetech valve and spring forks (s2r1k), the forks were compareable to the 900 forks with sbk internals. no complaints.i just want the rear set up now.
