That is a great deal to me.

You can get the D40 and a 18-55mm lense from best buy, on sale, for 450$.

There is a great package on that site for the D40, 18-55mm lense, and a 55-20mm lense for 424$.

That's a good deal.

Be aware one of the scams is online places advertise the lowest prices...then call you to do a bait and switch to something more expensive once the order is placed
(havent heard of this site...just sayin)

i've bought a dig camera from buydig.com and amazon.com with good results

Hrmmm...sounds a bit too good. I am not a big photog buff but my roommate is. She has like 6 cameras and 4 of the al DSLRs. I know she got a D40 with 2 lenses and some other misc. stuff for around $600 new and she was saying how great of a deal it was...of course this was 6 months ago too...

I always like to check www.resellerratings.com for reviews on sellers just to be safe...

As mentioned above, there are a lot of scam sites out there, particularly ones based in NY - they post addresses and pictures of storefronts that don't exist.  I waited until there was a deal on Amazon before I bought mine.  There seems to be a deal on slickdeals.net every month or so.

One other thing I'll add, I would avoid getting a package deal, unless you are familiar with and want all of the individual components they offer.  I bought an extra fast SD card and I am glad I did.  I am picky this way, but I spent some time checking out bags before I bought one.  Good luck...

Seems a bit too good to be true.

Also the 70-300mm D lens is pretty much useless with the D40 as it doesn't have the internal motor for AF. If you don't mind useing it as a manual focus lens then no big deal but otherwise, why bother.
I've been wallowing in my own chaotic and insecure delusions.

yes, thats why i went with the canon DSLR. all my canon lenses work with it. period.
in fact, i got my dad a rebel xti a couple years ago for christmas, despite the fact that he had a whole nikon film rig. the fact that most of the nikon lenses are not cross compatible is crap.

...or you could've bought a d80 and ALL his lenses would've worked.

the only thing that doesn't work on the "little Ds" is the autofocus. those bodies don't have an af screw drive built in, so you either need lenses with an af motor or you'll have to manual focus.

nikon bodies d50, d70 or "bigger" (d80, d90, etc) can mount just about every nikon lens made since 1960.

One of my friends picked one up recently for 400$ (Canadian) locally. The basic kit including a standard lens. So sub-300-400 US online sounds plausible.

Good camera, it's a pain to set the manual options (all digital, no analog controls) but it takes good photos and is easy to use. Personally I'd splurge on a Canon Rebel - they are easier to use, easier to adjust, and have a much faster save time (you can snap shots repeatedly without delay even in top quality, while the D40 has a delay of several seconds between each shot).
