I took mine off. Tongue

I just make sure to clean everything really well after every ride, and no wet stuff.

Well, it protects the rear shock from getting sprayed with road grime/gravel. Which could damage the shock piston and you'll have a leaking shock.
There are pretty nice ones in CF if you don't like the ugly plastic one.

My m750 did not have for 9k miles and the shock was not leaking a bit but it was also the cheap stock shock so I really did not care if it got messed up.  (which is probably why it didn't)

I ride sans front and rear fenders... If I get stuck in the rain, I usually get upset and throw the front one back on... but the rear has been off since the day I got her.  I would be more worried going open belt covers than without a rear hugger.

i think dome of you are confusing the hugger for the fender, the hugger protects the shock, the fender your back (from dirt)

Depends on where you live and ride. Out here the roads are pretty clean. But like I said, I wouldn't let any buildup build up.

Also, if it's a 696/1100, the rear shock points away from the wheel and the sensitive part is well out of the way.

w/r/t lube splatter from the chain (is the chain guard built into the hugger on classic monsters?), just lube the o-rings and wipe off any excess.

P.S. none of the BoMB have rear huggers, and one doesn't even have a front fender. Wink

Got rid of mine early on. No problems. Just a good hosin down now and then. IMO it looks a lot better.

I doubt it.  Most people understand he was talking about the black piece of plastic that covers the rear tire when he said he already had a tail chop.
