you should be fine. It reuses the mount bolts as the one with the holes for the windscreen to attach to.

The gauge cover uses different bolts then the bikini fairing, but my dealer charged me $2 for a set of them after I lost the originals so no biggie

I don't recall additional bolts coming in the boxes that ship with the bikes (though my memory may be off). Not sure why it would require different bolts either - you are replacing the gauge back plate (with holes for bikini fairing to attach) with another gauge back plate (without holes for bikini fairing to attach).

I just got a 796, no additional bolts came with it, if it's just like the 696, the bikini fairing uses a bracket that holds it and the bracket is in turn what holds it to the bike that has different mounting holes(placement and size). When I switched from the bikini to the regular backing plate I realized the bike didn't come with the bolts that are used for it. Had to pay a visit to my lost bolt drawer.
These are the brackets that hold the bikini fairing, the regular backing plate does not use them.

when you get your bike from the dealer, they should include the backing cover with 2 bolts. if not, they owe you. should not have to pay.

Damn, that might really suck. I don't think the Ducati dealership nearby will have those bolts....they don't have anything usually.

As I said earlier, I bought this bad boy privately. Already checked in with the seller and he didn't get it when he bought it. Either that or he doesn't want to be bothered by it.

I need to buy a front and rear stand for my m696. Pit bull seems to be the preferred stand, that's what a quick google search tells me anyway.
I assume this for the rear:

Any input for the front stand?

how involved do you plan to get when doing work?
if you are into big stuff - like rebuilding forks (or at least taking them off yourself to have them rebuilt, etc) - you'll really want to get a "under-triple lift" front stand, rather than one that lifts from the fork lowers.
a fork-bottom lifting front stand is limited in its use: It can lift to keep the tire from flat spotting while being stored, makes it easy to spin the tire to air it up, and you can remove the wheel/tire to do tire changes and fiddle with brake rotors, etc.
can't pull the forks if that's how you are lifting the front... now an under-triple lift stand is also limited, but less so: you can remove the wheel, the forks, etc. But by lifting under the bottom triple, you are prohibited from removing the lower triple to do a bearing overhaul on the front end etc. so you are back to suspending the bike from other means, like rafters or ladders/saw-horses and supports, etc.
