A diesel engine's compression ration is ~20 to 1 versus ~10 to 1 for gas. Engine braking would be huge. A slipper clutch would be required.
Nope, engine braking isn't a result of compression, it's caused by the vacuum that's pulled when the throttle is closed. A diesel would have LESS engine braking since it wouldn't have a throttle plate. (Hence Jake Brakes and vacuum pumps on diesels...)
