Thanks Scott, for the update.

Stickers are available at EDR, like he said. There is also a benefit that I posted in another thread that you guys can participate and help him out.

It's awesome that he's moving around as much as he is. I spoke to one of his doctors yesterday and she said it is possible while in a coma to get closer to the surface (waking up) and then go back down again. That may be what is happening when he opens his eyes and moves around.

Waking up from a coma is a very gradual process, it's not usually like in soap operas where the person suddenly opens their eyes, looks around, and starts talking. What usually goes on is the patient will be awake very briefly, seconds even, then the effort is so much that they will go back to how they were. The next time they may waken for a little longer, then a little longer until they are awake for minutes at a time. This is exhausting for them, so this may take a long time for them to fully "wake up." Most comas don't last longer than a few weeks, when they do it's called a "persistent vegetative state." That's where you see people out for 6 months or longer. I'm confident that Mase is not going to be one of those, but I'm also not a doctor so it's hard to say.

Thanks for all your positive energy guys, let's keep it up!!  chug

One more thing, his heart rate is spiking at times.  They think this is because he is beginning to feel pain, another good sign.

We visited him last night.

He is primarily off all his pain meds, only an occasional antibiotic and feeding tube. We're taking that as a good sign. Mo swears Mase gave him a cheesy smile when he was massaging his swollen hand and arm, eye cracked open. So we're thinking he's definitely becoming more and more responsive as time goes on.

Amber gave him a kickass mohawk yesterday, so when he does wake up he'll have different hair and sparkly fingernails and toenails.

Don't forget about his fund raiser on the 18th at American Cowgirls, I better see you guys there or there will be some serious ass-whoopin.

Quick update:

Today when I went to see him, his eyes were wide open and he was blinking and moving his eyes around. I more than halfway expected him to look over and just start talking. He still appears to be "not quite there" though. I don't know if he's still classified as comatose, I was unable to speak to any of his doctors.

I went to his bedside and stroked his hair a little bit, talking to him. He actually moved his eyes over as if he were looking at me. He moved his mouth like he wanted to say something, and he was trying so hard to speak. Despite that, he is still catatonic. When his eyes are open they are glazed over and he doesn't really focus them on anything. But I'm happy to say he was looking at things and seemed to be trying to talk all afternoon.

He is SO CLOSE, so close, and yet so far still. I want him to wake up so badly and he seems almost ready to do so.

On a more medical note, he still has small hemorrhages in his frontal lobe which they are concerned about, but his last CT showed no damage to his brain stem, which made us all breathe a big sigh of relief.

Major update:

Got a call from Mason's mom this morning saying he was mouthing words and sentences, and actually asking the nurse to stop pinching him because it hurt. Packed up my yard sale and zoomed to the hospital.

While I was visiting him, he kept squeezing my hand, stoking it with his thumb. His tracking was a little better, and he was definitely focusing more now than he was last time. We weren't able to decipher all the things he was trying to say, but some of it we could make out:

"I'm sorry"

"I love you"

"Oh yes" (after being asked if he needed a bottle of Crown Royal  laughingdp)

He still isn't classified as "awake" but he is getting there. There are ten levels of comatose, and he is currently a level 3 with 1 being completely incapacitated with no responses to any outside stimulation. So we have a long way to go but I'd say he's gone up a level or two in just the past few days.

Thanks again everyone for all your good thoughts, they have obviously helped!!!!
