696 Mirror Help
«
on:
March 28, 2009, 03:46:40 AM »
OK, so curious if anyone else is having same issue with stock mirrors? I do prefer a lower profile mirror, bar ends, but have two issues:
1. NEED and thrive on visibility! I USE my mirrors! long story, but limited ROM with neck so rely on mirrors. Not sure how good visibility is with bar ends, SO says his are crap?
2. Have Rizoma bar ends with frame sliders so not clear which bar end mirrors will work on my set up now?
The problem with my stock mirrors is the left (of course one I use/need most) has loosened. Seems the plastic is stripped inside so cannot tighten well enuff. Have tried serious cement/glue, but this eventually fails also. This is so bad, if going over 50 MPH, it will loosen and spin and eventually even BLEW OFF-but SO caught it mid air while he was riding my bike. Told him he should have just left it go
Suggestions please?

Some dealers have replaced stock mirrors under warranty. You're not the first with this problem. Some 696 owners even got to choose aftermarkets if they so wished.
If you can't move your neck to see what's on your sides, you need the mirrors to point somewhat outwards. That will be on the cost of seeing what's going on behind you. On a bike we can't normally have it both ways.
The other important functionality point with mirrors is the viewing angle. The closer a mirror is to your eyes and the larger the mirror is, the wider your viewing angle becomes. So, a large mirror, mounted high and a bit inwards is what you should be looking for. (If you really want to see behind you as well, you can add the small diameter bar end hindsight mirror to cover that angle)
My photo (never mind the ugly widener adapters, they're just for my needs) shows the Rizoma Impulsive, they have convex glass and can be mounted almost straight upwards. The lower adapter can be rotated/swapped to bring them even closer to you. Don't know if the bolts fit the 696 though. PJ'sParts will know.

If your interested I happen to have a good OEM left side mirror from my 696 available. Not sure if the mirror is your problem or the thread on the inside were it connects???
PM me if you want it.

I removed my stock mirrors on my 696 and put Rizoma reverse retro mirrors which are bar ends. Even though the mirror is indeed smaller, the view is much better. I had similar problems with my stock mirror. They kept on getting loose while driving which was driving me nuts. Will looking toward the end of the bar be an issue for you considering you limited movement? If it is, I suppose your options are limited.
Either way, here is a picture from PJsParts to show you what im talking about

I swapped my mirrors out for the CRG Hindsight mirrors. It does give you a view of your blind spot. I just wish it showed more of the "big picture".

WOW, thanks guyz
Well, SO informs me the BUSHING in mirror mount loosened. so, CuckyMonster
very kind, but not sure the mirror replacement will help afterall here?
Need to get Beastie Boy into Sebastian/Melillimoto anyways I guess, now especially since there may be hope for replacement under warranty, as I would expect because this did originally occur just shortly after only 600 miles on bike. I am a procrastinator, skeptic, so kept trying to fix ourselves
That helmet link is kewl, but just bought second, new Black Dahlia/Scorpion for track WOOT!

Those Rizomas look like an idea. I prefer the look of the bar ends/lower profile, but again prefer to be SAFE and you made too much sense about physiology of the mirrors. wow, thanks.

I have the CRG knock offs from cyclegear. Once they are adjusted properly I have no visibility problems. Dont even have to turn my head to see everything behind me. Just adjust my eyes to the left or right. Most times I can see everything behind me using only one mirror they are that good for me.

Agreed. The biggest issue I had with the stock mirrors was the vibration. The CRG LS bar end mirrors has zero vibration.

Hi
Do these limit the steering lock position (or whatever it's called when you turn the handlebar max. to the left or to the right)??
If they don't do that it's a must for me. Looks way better.

+2. Can easily be positioned to give a view to the sides, as well as directly aft. Don't budge once adjusted. Look a hell of a lot better than the Mickey Mouse ears, too!

I love mine. I can see a ridiculous amount behind and next to me... but because they are convex, if someone is a little behind you can see that there is someone there, but you can't see what it is... like if it is a patrol car or not. Still, worth every penny.
