696 Mod questions
«
on:
April 01, 2009, 02:07:14 PM »
I have been on my 696 now for 10 months. I have been very happy with it. I would like to make some changes to it and was hoping the more tech minded people around here could help me out.
1. I want to add a headlight modulator. I haven't seen anyone around do this yet. I just sent a note to Kisan and I'm hoping to hear back soon. I just worry this won't work with the odd headlight setup on the 696.
2. Swing arm. I am really considering finding a swing arm off an M1100 and swapping it out. I really like the way the single sided looks. Has anyone compared these? Do we know if the mounts will be the same?
3. Clutch. It drives me batty to have a wet clutch on my Duc. Is it even possible to change from a wet clutch to a dry clutch? Am I just crazy for asking this and wanting it? If it is possible, what is involved?
Any and all help would be appreciated.

Why wouldn't you just trade up to the M1100?

I keep thinking about it. I really just can't see ever needing an 1100 on the street. I may get in to way too much trouble with that much power. Plus I like having something a little different. Stock 1100 or modified 696...

Going to a dry clutch from a wet will mean changing out that entire side of the engine case. Ask Duck-Stew about how much work this is. I believe he's mentioned that it's not cheap or easy. As far as the swing arm is concerned, that's been tossed around too. Also big money. Long and short, it'd probably be cheaper to wait a little until some used 1100's hit the market, buy on & mod the piss out of it with what you'll save not buying new.
Unless you happen to have really deep pockets...

i agree with thee 1100 comment. its not that much more power. isn;t it only 95 HP compared to the 696 80?
is this correct?
anyways, what is a headlight modulator?
i too have wondered about the SSS , mya be worth it, but then, theres the $1500 for the wheel.

Having owned a M696 and now a M1100S, I can say the power is noticeably more. Especially if you look at the torque (50.6 lb vs. 75.9 lb). There's enough torque to make accidental wheelies a regular occurrence if you're not careful.
Headlight modulators are headlights that look like it's pulsating or look like the bulb is flickering. It helps oncoming traffic see you easier. I've seen them on scooters and they do catch your attention. I believe some states consider these illegal, so good to check first.

This is the headlight modulator:

They are legal in California, and I see them around a good bit. People that have them swear by them and will never go without. You basically hook it up to your high beam/high beam switch and it will pulse. There is a light sensor that will stop it from pulsing when it starts to get too dark. In CA, they are legal during the day, but at night it has to be a steady beam.

I guess with the upgrade option, I really can't justify buying another new bike. I have some money into this one (Termis, 14T sprocket, fender eliminator, carbon nose) and some miles in the saddle. I would also rather have a bike that only I have ridden versus something I don't know the history on and the mods on - even if that bike is a little smaller and lacking in a few small things.

that torque is a lot larger! was the HP on? anyways, yeah, i just can't see dropping an 1100 engine in it being at all worth the $
single sided swing arm, another story. let us know if you try it out

ok, so that I do not get told to do a search, I did a search and came up with this.
I am interested in a couple of the things this guy was and it doesn't seem there was any definitive answer. What is the cost and effort involved in changing out from a wet to a dry clutch? To piggy back on that, is there any benefit/consequence of changing it other than getting the iconic sound and cool clutch covers?
And also on the change from dss to sss, both questions, cost/effort and benefit consequence?
To the OP, did you ever move forward with these mods?

ok i think i finally have answers for two of your questions.
the wet to dry clutch kit is @1500 and should be the same one for the 848 from one of our sponsors
http://www.store.commoto.com/ducati-slipper-clutch-conversion-p-4126.html
and another sponsor, Motocreations is working on a SSS for the bike. hasn't released a price yet though that i know of.

You already have the cost. As far as benefit/consequence, for street use you're just doing it for the looks and sound. There are some other tangible benefits, such as the engine oil does not pick up all the debris coming off the clutch pack, plus you should save a bit of weight.
