Speedo Having a Fit!!

Riding along at a steady 80k and I notice my speedo needle misbehaving!!
It is jumping 10k to 20k from the steady speed. Tried different speeds and the reaction is the same. Its doing it intermittently and is increasing in frequency.
I have removed the sensor on the rear axle and gave the face a clean but to no avail.
I feel an expensive fix coming on. Has anyone had this happen?? And if so what was the result/fix?? 

Does anyone have an idea of the cost of the components in this system???

Not the same problem but, mine would sit on 13k rpm even when it wasn't running.

Fixed under warranty, had to change the whole instrument cluster.

Told me it was a common problem across all Monsters, 2001 up.

When _I_ had that problem, it was 'cause my speedo cable had gotten wet and rusty - pulling the inner out of the speedo cable and cleaning it and getting it good and messy with boat trailer wheel bearing grease fixed it right up.

You newbies with your new fangled magnet-and-hall-sensor speedos though... I dunno...

there is one thing i can sugest is to spray and check all conectors and plugs on wiring lume seen similar problem with dirty contacts , it will raise resitance

Gee Thanks Super, I needed that.  I'll have to get a loan to pay for the parts if the cluster is the problem.

Careful spraying too much of that wd40 or CRC around your connectors, that sh*t is good only if stuff is wet, what can happen is it can creep into any dodgy connections and make em worse as it is an insulator, but definitely check looms and connectors, just pulling them apart and putting them back together may improve things.

I have cleaned all connections but to no avail.
Its worse than ever and now wont read a steady speed .....varying between 50k and 240k. (Be good if it actually accelerated as quick as the needle is moving!! 4 Valvers eat yer heart out )
I guess this is gunna cost a squillion???

i've heard this happening a bit but from what i've read in the tech section, on that_other_ board that we no longer mention (DON'T MENTION THE WAR!!) that the replacement cluster isn't super pricey, somewhere around the $300 to $400 mark i think??
for cleaning contacts use CRC contact cleaner, much better than 5.56 or wd40.

There may be some drama with the whole red key / ecu / instruments / immobiliser stuff... I _think_ you could use a 2nd hand set of instruments so long as you've got the red key that matches the ecu. But you'd want to check with someone who knows about these new-fangled digital bikes before you handed over the money...

I heard on a recent NDDOC run that a new cluster for a 620 cost over $1k, so yeah it could be pricey (if this is what is needed)

Does anyone know if the odometer data is stored in the speedo head or the ECU?  Hopefully the ECU and the head is just a "readout" facility like a 'puter VDU.

Well it looks like the cluster has to replaced as a unit!! Which would include reprogramming the secuirity system et al.
In excess of $1100 is the estimated starting cost, even though the bike has only done 28,000k. Not bloody happy Jan.
I wonder if instrument technicians can fix them, or as has happened with a lot of trades nowadays they have become a group of "FITTERS" with no diagnostic and/or repair skills.
Looks like I'll be riding on the Tacho until I decide what to do!! From what I can gather after reading posts on these problems, Ducati recognised the problem on a number of these speedos and they were replaced under warranty, but as usual my warranty switch clicked off long ago.

That blows, I was gonna just ask about warranty, I would at least try and hit Ducati up for replacement.

But when they say NO!, that's when it hurts.

Maybe you could go for something aftermarket which may be cheaper, I know I saw something on here that had a pretty sweet looking cluster.

 

I know, PM Bobspapa, he has one on his 750.
