So I was in a local Chase bank yesteday and discussed this concern with the branch manager and he told me that they have been aware of this for some time. According to him, the best way to address this at the ATM or other swiping stations, is to always swipe your debit card as CREDIT. This gives you the support and insurance of Visa (for example) in the event that your card is swiped and refunds are necessary.

FYI.

Looks like they're back at it! Check out what was discovered at a Citi bank in CA.

The side cut out was not visible when it was on the ATM. The skimmed card data would also be wirelessly sent to an computer where the data could be... misused.

Would you have caught that?

No way I would have seen that.

Will look from now on.

Thanks for posting!

It's like I keep saying:  Those who would sacrifice a free range session for a giant beer, deserve neither free range time nor a giant beer.

i have had guys reach back and grab my crotch in an attempt to get around me. i'll either blow in their ear or ask them politely to let go of my wang.

Another reason why I cover the pad at the ATM so that nobody, nothing, and not even I can see it.

They don't have to see it. The skimmer downloads it as you input the code.

I pulled one out of a gas pump. Thief had the special key to get into a pump. The skimmer was placed in line (Just like a PC3) and even opened up it looked like part of the system. It could hold a huge amount of data and then he would come back and remove the item. Some have been set up that, as said before, can be downloaded wirelessly.

But but but...  The picture only shows the skimmer and that one's not wired into the machine to read your input, only your card as it passes through. :-[

There isn't really anything you can do about it if someone can get into the machine. Best defense is to check your statements regularly and often I guess. People always say ATM and Debit this and that, but in reality credit cards can be stolen the exact same way. I mean, when I tank up with a credit card, it only asks for my zip code. You could crap shoot that if you skim the card. A lot of people gas up within a couple of zip codes of home.

Well, I guess you could just walk into the store/bank all the time and then you only have to worry about someone stealing your card at restaurants when they take your card away to pay. Oh, and never shop online or use online banking either.

What he's getting at with the credit card thing is that you have recourse for fraudulent activity through Visa, MasteCard, etc. With a debit card, you don't always have that protection...

These things always bring to mind all the commercials advertising the convenience of using a card. I'll stick with mostly cash.

I typically only use the ATM at work-it's in a secured area, next to the security guards booth  :)

If it is a MasterCard or Visa debit card you always have the same protection as a credit card if the debit card is compromised.

The machine is *not* accessible to outsiders.
