Pegs on monsters low?
«
on:
April 08, 2009, 10:35:49 AM »
I was hitting a posted 25mph corner at about 80 and my boot hit pretty hard mid tern...now I have never had a problem with it before, but that is the hardest I have hit it and every other time it has been like butter. I looked at my boot/bike afterwards and it scraped off about a 1/8" off of the boot (hiking boot cause it was cloudy and they are my only waterproof ones) and scraped the kickstand foot too. as far as the kickstand goes, I think the jolt could have caused it to jump and hit the pavement. my buddies were saying that it was cause I didn't lean on the bike, I just was sitting square on the seat. could it be that the pegs are sorta low on the monster? is that why all of the aftermarket rearsets move up/back? the leaning thing makes sense and I was actin a bit stupid by not doing it but I thought I had more room than that.....what do you guys think? oh and it is stock s2r800 suspension with a 260lb guy on it if that makes a difference. thanks for the help

Yes, monster pegs are lower than most modern supersports. It shouldn't be a problem.
Yes, the suspension on your bike is a problem when it comes to clearance. It's set-up from the factory for someone more than 100 lbs lighter than you.
Yes, clearances is one of the reasons why they move rearsets up and back.
Yes, your body position was a contributing factor.
Yes, that's too fast for street riding. I don't have much faith in the sign postings for corner speeds, but I don't care where you are, 80 on at 25mph posted curve is not ok. No, I don't think you were actually going that fast.
BTW, in case you didn't realize it, that was your wake-up call from God. Slow down. Read some basic riding technique books (there are good threads in Riding Techniques). Slow down. Work on body position. Slow down. Have your suspension looked at. And slow down.

sorry that was a typo.....it was 35 (on an offramp which is generous), not 25 and I didn't realize I was going 80 until it was too late, so I just decided to follow through(at least it looked like it was around 80) I do not go that fast normally, it just sort of happened. It was one of those days that I probably shouldn't have been riding because I was really distracted with stuff that is going on lately...this isn't a thread trying to say "oh shit look at me I have mad skillz but I need help to go faster so I can race on da streets!" I just ran into this issue, and decided to ask for some help. I picked up keith code's twist of the wrist book and video but I haven't started going through them...I have worked on my riding skills to a point, but this truly has been a wake up call. I have been trying to decide whether I should put my tax return into my truck or my bike and I think I will be redoing the suspension on my bike. I am for the most part a responsible rider and I am going to be working on my riding skills. I immediately thought about my twist of the wrist book after this happened so I will be working more on technique. I just wanted help figuring out what went wrong. thanks for the responses

You dont have to be rich. Cornerwork half a day, ride the other half. I've done basically all my trackdays like this.

Taki Inoue. Most infamous F1 back marker ever. Retired 13/18 races. 9th, 12th, 8th (no points), 15th, 12th in the other 5. His car got hit by a marshal's car once, too.

suspension is far too soft for you, time to respring. time to lean off of bike, and if you are 'going that fast' during a turn, you do not need to be looking at your speedo. that's just asinine. and you shouldn't be flirting with disaster (queue molly hatchet) on a public road.
and that video makes me think i could absolutely apply for a job in F1.
