Sneak preview of super secret project!
«
on:
April 08, 2009, 08:27:12 PM »
As many of you know, I'm a bit crazy. You may have seen some of my other threads regarding my new project bike, and to help keep myself motivated, I'm going to be posting teasers from time to time.
The beginning:
http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=19640.msg350326#msg350326
current progress:
Mounted front wheel so I could see the frame angles for the new tank design.
Yummmmm .... spokes!
Cardboard and shop towel mock tank
Thats all for now, more to come this weekend.
And yes, my garage is a mess

I like the wheel. What is it from? One of the Duc retro-bikes? Are they an easy fit? Sorry if you've already answered this question 500 times, I didn't see it.

They are from a 06 Sport classic. Its a 25 mm axle so it will *fit* most modern monsters and ss's but there is some downsides.
Brake interference: the spokes contact with a 4 pot brake, it will take some shimming/ custom brackets.
Rear: if you have a 17 mm rear axle, you have to have a sleeve adapter made, may be some alignment issues, AIm not to that point yet.
Weight: heavier than hell (even the AL ones like mine) also a tubed, so tire selection is more limited.
They can be fit, it just takes some effort. Your best bet is to let someone crazy do all the hard stuff/spend the money/ work out all the kinks, and then get them to help you for free. (I really need to learn to take my own advice.)

Talk to Dietrich about the tube (non) issue. There is a fairly simple fix for that, pretty cheap too...

I followed that thread, and will probably be doing the same thing.
But due to weight, I may get a second set of rims for track use, a dont really care so much on the street.

Remember if you space your calipers/rotors you'll have to do something with the track wheel rotors too.

How about shaving the rear of the calipers? I ran a 40mm brembo 4 pot on a Yamaha motard and was able to remove enough material off the back side to clear the spokes. In fact, the billet GP caliper could be purchased from Yoyodyne already machined.

I suspect the amount of shaving necessary would result in leakage.

Yeah, and I happen to like having functioning brakes.
Im going to probably mill an adapter plate for the rotor, and bracket the caliper accordingly.

Milling the back of the goldline calipers will work if your fitting sportclassic wheels, its only a minimal amount needs to be skimmed off the corner of the caliper and doesnt affect the fluid chambers.
One of the guys did exactly this when he fitted goldline calipers to his SC over on Ducati.ms, if you search through the sportclassic section you will find it

'06 Paul Smart 1000LE actually, and SS's have 17mm rear axles....all of 'em did.

Adding tubes doesn't effect the tire selection man, its just whether or not a tubed tire can be run without one. Heavy as hell?!? That's relative. The disc wheels on a V-Rod are like 30lbs each....
