I just got my new Rizoma clip ons and started to dismantle the (please  bare with my advanced tech jargon) handlebar and all the other stuff on it mirrors, throttle etc.. i now need to take off the 2 big nuts on the top of each fork (monster 620ie 2002) ive tried everything   bang head but they just wont budge and now i think ive worn the thread on one of the nuts, am i doing something wrong or are they always really tight???  Huh?

Anybody got any suggestions as to how im gonna get my bike back in action before the wekend?

those dont get taken off for this...those are for servicing the fork internals.
upper triple clamp is removed with 4 pinch bolts (on the sides)
one bolt on top of the triple
one pinch bolt on back of triple (just forward of ignition)
be careful with that last one its easy to strip...

What path of logic did you take that made you decide that those two bolts are involved in the handlebars somehow?

Just watch out for the pinch bolt near the key, loosen the steering stops and shorten your allen key...

dont raise the forks unless you are aware of what changes this is going to make to the geometry of the front end

Dear god.  This is not something that can be talked through unless the person is somewhat mechanically inclined.  I am not trying to flame at all I promise but if you thought that loosening the fork caps would get you anywhere near where you need to be then I would suggest stopping whatever you are doing right now.  Then do one of two things: 1) find someone local to you on this board who has used a wrench before and offer some beer/hookers as payment to come over and walk you through this or 2) take it to the shop.

Even if you managed to get it apart how confident are you in your own abilities to put it back together and it stay put together when you go for a ride?

UPDATE: Thanks all for your replies.... the reason i was going to try to take the fork caps off is that in the picture in the rizoma instructions the forks look like that has been done to them although now i now that must be a different model that they are showing.

Also the triple clamp was completley jammed down, ive now figured out why; the two screws which connect the dials to the bike and then the triple clamp go through a rubber mounting with a screw bit on both ends these are completley corroded cause water somehow got in there and instead of simply lifting out were completley jamming the whole thing, (i think theres been some kind of reaction with water aluminium and steel) ive now disconnected headlights etc and mannaged to get these out (although they are completley corroded and im gonna have to get some new ones before i go on...........)

by the way i have to take the triple clamp off because the set has a new on and the old triple wouldn't work.

Once agin thanks all for your help any other suggestion would be greatly appreciated

Kudos for having the balls to jump right in to working on your bike, but shame on you for not doing your homework!  Grin

My recommendations are (1) with the help of the Search button, do a little (or a lot) of reading on this board, and (2) buy a shop manual for your bike and start reading that too.   Smiley

I consider myself average at best as far as mechanical skills go,  but with a group of friends who work on their bikes, and reading posts in the Tech section (particularly those of Ducpainter, Brad Black, Duck Stew and especially Speeddog to name a few) and my shop manual, I've broadened my knowledge base and over a few years, I've gone from changing my oil to valve adjustments and more.
