Nothing but a few papers, a note pad and coffee mug on the glass work surface (1/4" thick) and this is what I find this morning (glad the pup and 'puter and I weren't here when it exploded) â€" sorry for the "IZzy" pictures:

Looks like tempered glass.  It doesn't take much of a scratch to make it do that.

It happened overnight.  That's what she showed up to this morning.

I'm sure the glass was cold and the mug hot. which causes the glass to fracture like that.  Our landlord tried cleaning our fridge and he pulled the glass from the fridge to the outside in hot weater and crash turned into pebble glass.
I live vicariously thru myself......

Where was the thermos/coffee cup when you left the previous evening?

Ordinary glass, yes that would happen but this is tempered which can withstand some heat.  (I watched my mom pour super hot chocolate into a glass pitcher when I was a wee one.  I made a mental note on that one for sure!)

Just sitting on top of the desk - the glass part.  I hadn't used it in several days.  We have 5 of these desks in our office.  I'm the newest one and have been using it for a year w/o incident.  We're all a little nervous now.  This is what I just found in the interwebs:

"Tempered glass breaks in a unique way. If any part of the glass fails, the entire panel shatters at once.  Tempered glass might also fail long after the event that caused the failure. Stresses continue to play until the defect erupts, triggering breakage of the entire panel."

Interesting! (At least to my geek self anyway.)     [roll]

Yup, I discovered that the hard way, once working in the dishroom in college I had a Pyrex bowl explode in my hand leaving glass splinters in my thumb. :(
