I owned an FZ1 and currently own an FJR.

Both are fantastic bikes. Fast, comfortable, handle really well, and are as reliable as the day is long.

The FJR is a touring bike that you can rip through the canyons on better than most other touring bikes. I've blistered the tires on more than one occasion.
This tire was about done in the center but had enough left to spend about an hour above 110 riding through the long sweepers in the Utah desert

But the FJR is a relatively heavy bike The FZ1 is much lighter and a bit faster. It's not quite as good as the FJR for two-up but just fine for anything but multi-day pillion riding.
If you are going to do long multi-day rides it's hard to beat an FJR, IMO it's the best sport tourer value on the market.
But if you just want a good - fast - fun nakid, the FZ1! is lighter and more nimble with more power and just as much comfort.

Both are a better value than anything Ducati IMO.

Good luck

The FZ1 (specially naked - FZ1N conversion for us here in the U.S.) is a GREAT bike.  OTD Cycles in Oakland, CA has the '09s for $8.6K OTD right now - Wow...  [thumbsup]  By buddy just got one and couldn't be happier.

Good luck!

I think an MTS1K would work well!  But, a little on the pricey side for one that's not beat.  Also, see above about no Ducati dealers in my area.

The major downside to the FJR i can see, without riding it, is it's low.  I have a 36" inseam and can flat foot the 950sm or any other bike on the market.  The FJR seemed really really low.

When I ride I like to be able to hang my legs down once in a while to stretch out, this would not at all be an option on the FJR.

Not having a Duc Dealer near by maybe an inconvenience.  That said, if you are slightly mechanically inclined, it doesn't require much maint.  Warranty issue maybe of problem of course, only dealers can handle that.

Anyway, just as others have commented, used MTS are surprisingly low cost.  I got my 2005 MTS1000 with about 2000 miles on ODO for $7300 in May 2007, just for reference.  It will also handle ur 36" inseam with ease.  Heck you can even adjust the suspension height up even more if you'd like.  :)  Enough of me trying to advertise the Multi because I had one before.  If you really like FJR/FZ1, do go for one of them.   I'm just a Duc Addict.  Haha.

Just to be clear, no duc dealer around is not in inconvenience because I can't do the work. . .

It's because I'd have to trade in the SMR.

Ive decided to keep it.  I like a challenge ;)

I was on my way to test ride the FJR, and put my Airhawk seat pad on since it was about 100 miles round trip.  It was a big help and I had a TON of fun riding this thing around the curves, on dirt roads, on the cloverleaf's on the highway (where i leaned it over past 45* I think, and scuffed the tire to the edge)

It's a very capable bike.  My luggage came in and a steel rack to mount bags to is on now.  It's getting there ;D

I like how it's light, and I can take it anywhere and I can jump it [laugh]

Pics to come.
