It's pretty outrageous to say that an industry as upstanding as the Petroleum industry would ever be at odds with anyone with competing interests.
Diesel simply invented an engine that produced more horse power and can run on vegetable oils that sell for like $0.03 a gallon and can be produced nearly anywhere except the middle east.
Why would that be a problem?

Did Wankel die a mysterious death like Diesel?
Oooooo....
(c'mon, gotta keep the thread alive somehow)
EDIT
This just in from the news/history/thread-survival desk. Take it away, wikipedia...
Diesel's Death
...t "Coertsen" came upon the corpse of a man floating in the sea. The body was in such an advanced state of decomposition that they did not bring it aboard. Instead, the crew retrieved personal items (pill case, wallet, pocket knife, eyeglass case) from the clothing of the dead man, and returned the body to the sea. On the 13th of October these items were identified by Rudolf's son, Eugen Diesel, as belonging to his father.
No one knows for sure how or why Diesel was lost overboard. Grosser (1978)[5] presents a credible case for suicide. There are conspiracy theories that suggest that various people's business interests may have provided motives for homicide. Evidence is limited for all explanations.[6]
Storys like this intrigue me.

That engine sounds awesome. Weird for a Norton though, eh?
and from my "I don't have anything more of value to contribute to this discussion" file . . . I've always thought the name Wankel sounded dirty.
hmm, and I thought the piston was kinda dirty...where's an animated gif when you need one?

Didn't Wankel do the radial piston engine as well used in WWI? I could have sworn the bi-planes had these "Wankel radial or rotating engines. There's also the rotating kind
so sexy...
tangent ahead:

I
don't think so
. You're thinking of the rotary piston engine, which has its cylinders arranged in a radial configuration.

They did have piston rotary engines, as opposed to a
pistonless Wankel rotary engine
. Next generation aircraft generally had radial piston engines, which describe the arrangement of the cylinders.

BTW - That diagram is of a conventional radial piston engine, where the cylinders stay put and the crankshaft rotates. On the rotary radial piston engine, the cylinders rotate and the crankshaft stays put:

Sounds cool. Too bad that they are using a Spondon extruded beam frame circa 1994. I guess that they could race it in Formula Dinosaur or something.

Always a fan of that car. It did not, if I recall, have flames coming out of glowing red pipes.
My 3rd gen (twin turbo) does (The glowing red pipe that is!!) after a few spirited runs into the 15psi range.
Earlier ones like my RX2 did have flames out the pipe inc glowing red pipes....
Even with my cat still in place the sound is glorious when at full honk. Second only to the RS.

The seat cooler, however, is an option...
