My 696 sputtered out. Any opinions on why this may have happened?

I'm bummed that the reason for this post is because my 696 now sits in a shop waiting to be inspected.  I've had it for about ten months and I've put about 8k miles and have not had a single probem until now.  ???

I was 20 miles en route to school yesterday. I was sitting at a light and the bike was in neutral when it suddenly puttered out. It sounded like it was choking out. I start it up again and it sounded like it was firing on only one cyclinder/half running and then it puttered out again. The final sounds it was making almost sounds like clicking, as in metal flying around. I might be paranoid, but I fear the worst that there's some way the timing belt broke and it caused serious damage to the cylinder. The bike's less than a yr old and I know there's no way that should happen -- it's an irrational fear, right?  :-\  But my 748 did that and ruined our relationship forever because of how much it cost me to fix.  [bang]

The only thing I did different to the bike recently was I installed the full termi's with ecu and air filter. It's been about 200 miles since I did that and I thought if I needed to take to the dealer to get adjustments I would've known in the first few rides. Would installing the pipes cause this?

I just got the 7500 mi service and it was running like a champ. I did the pipes a week after that. Yesterday I had gas and it had been running and hot when this happened. If anybody has any theories they'd be much appreciated. At the very least, I'm using this post to vent a little  [bang]  I really need it to be minor issue and NOTHING major because I'm over making repairs on ducs. Hopefully by Fri Munroe said they'll know what's up... I need the bike to do my trackday which is in less than two weeks.

Did you mean you just got gas?

Maybe you bought some water with it?

I hate to say this but when something like this happens in my profession it's because the aircraft just came out of maintenance  :-\
I am super paranoid when I see a service inspection just completed!

Who did your 7500 mile service. They may have Fuuucked up and not tightened something properly.

No, what I meant was I checked after it stalled to make sure there was gas in it. And no I, personally, didn't have gas  [cheeky]. It only 75 miles on the tank.

You're right about that. It does seem pretty odd that it's doing this right after I got it serviced. It's going back to where the service was done. Another friend mentioned it might be the ecu.

Man, I'm peeved. I just sat through awful traffic wishing I had the bike  >:(

Hmm...heard of a few reports like this now.... the others all have been elecrtical problems rather than mechanical ones.... "The final sounds it was making almost sounds like clicking".... could this "clicking" sound have been the sound of a fried relay attempting to pull in???  Coz this has been the culprit on at least one other occasion.

Please keep us informed when you find out the cause and Good Luck with it, hopefully nothing serious.

Perhaps it could be something electrical. Someone mentioned it could be the ecu. Whatever it is I really hope it's minor and I can get my baby back soon  :P

There is a recall on the wiring harness, maybe when they did the service, they made it worse...  Hope you get her back soon, interested to hear whats going on as I just kit 9k on my Dark and just did the 7500 service a few weeks back...

I'm in shock and can't believe the news I just heard. Munroe's just looked at my bike and found that something catastophic did happen and the vertical cylinder has been damaged. They're pulling apart the engine right now and it's gonna be weeks before it's fixed  [bang] [bang] I was supposed to go to a two-day novice school on may 25th-26th and now I won't get to without a bike. I'd been looking forward to it ALL YEAR LONG  [bang] [bang]

It's ridiculous to me that an engine that's less than a year old has to be rebuilt and I'm gonna try to either get a new bike or a refund. 8k and ten months old -- not acceptable.

I agree.

I just talked to them and they said the exhaust valve seized. They said the valve and guide will have to be replaced. They don't know what caused it. wow, this blows.

New bike based on what?

Read the warranty...and the lemon law stuff.

I really don't think you have a case for a new bike...

and yes...a failure like that sucks.

The old saying: Shit Happens
That's why you have a warranty, Things go wrong, it sucks and Blows, but sadly that's life.

You want to see the Warranty list for my S2R 800 Monster, It's mind blowing, but such is life, I waited 5 weeks for my bike because of $5 rubber seal that had to come from Italy!
But each thing that has failed has not caused the other failure, just a series of small things.

It's a sad thing when your new toy breaks, but no matter how much you spend on anything (Car, bike, whatever) things break down.
Just keep in touch with your dealer, see if they can give you an approx ETA on when your bike will return to you, and spend that time surfing the web looking for more bling bits for ytour Monster  ;D
