I'm still on the hunt for my first monster, I've decided to get a 620. For those of you who have previously owned one any tips, or anything to look out for. I realise that some were released in the resricted LAMS guise, but are there any other difference between the various year models??

There are some in the 2005 model range that came with gold line 4 pot calipers instead of the black 2 potters.
Buying a 620 is pretty much the same as buying any used bike though.
Guess you gotta look for frame damage/nick's see if there is any crash history.
Being a 620 it is possible as they are learner legal.

Mine was an 05-620 w/gold lines. It also happened to be a repairable write off, but was very straight.

I too had the pleasure of owning one, only let her go recently as a matter of fact.

I believe the slipper clutch was introduced on the 05 models. As a noob rider I appreciated the slipper, especially with the strong engine braking in the v-twins.

Are you on your L's... what's the basis for choosing a 620 monster?

There are some in the 2005 model range that came with gold line 4 pot calipers instead of the black 2 potters.

Which means up until the changeover date in 2005 all the 620s (I believe the first of the fuel injected 'little bikes') would have the goldlines.

I believe the slipper clutch was introduced on the 05 models.

The earlier ones from 2002 did not have the APTC 'slipper clutch'.

New brake and clutch levers, brake and gear change pedals also are a give away that at the minimum a fall over has happened!!

Scrapes at the edges of the mirrors, and new bar ends also can give some onfo as to what might have occured in the past!!  Huh?

And imagine the bike on its side and what would be touching down and look for signs/marks that its been over. Roll Eyes

Chain/wheel alignment is also a potential indicator of damage, so either a trammel or a simple piece of string will assist in checking for twists and bends.  Shocked

woohoo!!! ........................rode my first monster today a 2002 620 [moto]
Riding position felt great, height was good it felt just right. After only having ridden 250's before ,the power felt more than enough and I think at this stage of my riding career that the 620 is just what I'm after.

This monster  only had 15K on it and was in fairly standard form with the only mods a set of staintunes, the guy had owned it since new so thats a bonus, but...............the tank was dinged from a stationary drop, the paint was fairly scratched around the keyhole and the engine and chain looked like it had never seen a clean so it obviously hadn't been loved as much as it deserved.

Overall it was alright and a hoot to ride but I think he was aking too much for the condition it was in and its age.

Now just have to find more monsters to have a look at and compare

bigfella, I'll send you a PM

Good news Ollie.

What was the guy asking? I think I remember it from when I was advertising mine.
Happy hunting for your 620 if you're after someone to come looking with you just ask.
Not that I am a Mecho or anything but another set of eyes always helps, specially when it comes to haggling price.

and be patient!

you now know what you want, take you're time and get the right one at the right price!

well done....sounds like a good relationship already!

I remember the chain on my first...I naturally assumed it was black...until I started to clean it...it turned out to be a gold D.I.D! By the time i'd given it the old love tug it looked like something the aztecs would have worshipped.

the bloke wanted 9500 for it.
Thanks for the offer, I'm down in the ACT and not that many monsters come up for sale so syd is probably the best option. It would be handy if one does come in sydney if someone could check it out for if it was nearby before I came up to have look.

the 6 speed ones have the aptc clutch, which has a much lighter lever effort, like a s2r 800.  i had one in last week, it was a late 04 build from memory.  i think it had black 2 piston calipers, now that matty mentions it.

i had to fit a u59 as it was bought without keys.  went really well, better than i remember other 620 going, and it was all std.  quite good fun really.
