S2R 800 Chain and Sprockets?
«

Well the time has come for a new chain on my 06 S2R 800. My sprockets seem to be in good shape but I am not opposed to either dropping a tooth in the front or going up a few in the rear. This brings up my questions. What is the stock chain width and length for the S2R? I do some slab commuting to work and am typically cruising around 75mph with the motor turning 4.5K RPM and I get around 110-120 miles before the gas light comes on. Do you guys think I should keep the stock gearing or raise it a bit to get some more umph so to speak. I'd rather go up a few in the rear rather than down in the front. I believe the front tooth count is 15? What would the rear be? Not totally sure which way I want to go on this one so I'm just looking for your experiences. The chain is getting replaced regardless, thanks guys.

I've got an 07 S2R 800 and I get 135+ before the gas light comes on (with slip on Termi's, DP ECU, and open airbox).
I don't have many answers for you on the chain length and such but my 07 came stock with a 15T front and I switched out to a 14T. It helped me lug the engine less in city traffic.

Yea not sure why my mileage is so low. I'm currently running an open udder, stock air box, and the PCIII with just the stock map loaded. I know I am running rich at the moment and a dyno tune would really help. I am a bit ham fisted with the throttle though and I do a lot of highway miles with toll booths and what not so that doesn't help either.
I may have seen something that equated 3 teeth up in the rear was equivalent to 1 down in the front? Not sure though. I suppose I could just work it out. You may have sold me with the less lugging in traffic. What are you revving at at highway speeds?

I know there's some information somewhere on the forum about what the equation is for how many in the back equals how many in the front. Hopefully someone will chime in.
As far as my revs at highway speeds, I can't remember off the top of my head. I think in 6th, I've got about 5K at around 75 mph but I won't have opportunity to double check for several days. My bike seems happiest running around at a little over 4k but still has good pep (at least, I think so) on the interstate when I've gotta dodge cagers. I've never had trouble with not having power at high speed when I need it.
I've got a little town down the road from me thats 25mph with stop and go traffic. I have no problems with lugging through there and the bike also seems to pull really well out of 1st gear switchbacks that are prevalent here.

Stock gearing is 15/41.
Going 15 to 14 is 1/15=6.67% higher revs at all times. Lots of people think it's a great help.
Going 41 to 44 is 3/41=7.31% higher revs at all times.

Ok so not a huge difference between the two. With the 43 rear I'd be running a little over 4.8K not to bad. Anyone know the stock chain size? 520? 525?

I have the same, 06 S2R 800, just did mine a while back. If no one else posts shortly, I'll be home in a bit and will post up some information and pics. When I did my chain, I kept the stock gear ratio but went with a different type of chain and a quick change sprocket carrier in the rear, with a custom sprocket hub cover from MotoWheels. I also picked up a chain breaking/rivet kit and did the work. Are you planning on taking yours in or DIY?

The S2R800's have a 520 chain. I just ordered my chain and sprockets to change everthing out on my 800. I currently have a 14/41 setup and like it. I ordered a 14/42 this time. I talked with Jeff @ monsterparts.com and decided to stick with the 14 tooth in the front instead of going back to the 15 and a much bigger rear sprocket. I still went up one in the rear just to see what it would do. I doubt it will make that big of a difference. If it turns out to be to much, I will go back to the 41 rear next round.

I did my S2R 800 not to far back. Stayed with 15T front, and replaced the old one with an AFAM I got from the local dealership. It was a slightly lighter version that has the holes in it, not that it matters much for my use, but it was all they had at the time. Worked fine.
For the rear I upgraded to a quick change carrier and added a sprocket hub to replace the stock one, just to give it some dark bling. All that was from MotoWheels.com.
For the chain, I went with what I think is a really nice looking black chain, my bike is a dark, from Desmoworks, but it doesn't look like they have chains on their site anymore when I looked just now, but you could call them. It was an EK 520 MVXZ with 120 links length, but I recall not all were used. Off hand I can't recall the count. I think the package came without the rivet style master link, but came with a screw type or something, but upon inquiry I was sent the rivet type no problem.
Also did the install myself thanks to the handy video encouragement here

Pics below...
Bushings from the old setup were in good shape at the time and reused. Here's the quick change sprocket and carrier and to the right the hub cover.

Personally I hated the 14T on my S2R 800 and took it out 2 weeks after I put it in. I ride mostly twisty mountain roads and being forced to spend half my time shifting up and down before and after every turn was kind of annoying.
Since you're getting new sprockets I highly recommend the AFAM quick change carrier. Messing with the rear gives you more options, and if you end up getting something you don't like you can switch it yourself pretty easily. Sure the front is easy to change too, but for me the drop from 15 to 14 in the front was just way too much. I like the finer adjustment of the rear.
I'm at 15/42 and like it, but might try 15/43 next time I need to replace sprockets.

Hey thanks for all the info guys and nice photo write up DarkDucati.
I talked to a guy at a local race shop here and was told the link count is 102 with a 520 width. I am def thinking of going up 3 in the rear if I can find a 44 tooth sprocket. What is the benefit of going to the quick change hub? Once I get it on there I don't plan on taking it off until it wears out or I switch back to stock. I am def planning on doing it myself. I have my own chain rivet tool and custom chain breaker (angle grinder) Any thing I should watch out for or special tools needed?

I went with the Supersprox rear sprocket. It is my first venture outside of Ducati's stock replacement. The Supersprox is a one piece design as opposed to the AFAM sprocket and carrier. I don't know what the benefits to the quick change sprockets are. It seems like the one piece sprocket would be simpler and lighter. Don't take my word for it though. This will be my first attempt at this project. That will be obvious in a couple of days by my series of post and pics of my bike's pcs scattered across my garage. I will be interested to hear what you think about the 15/44 setup. Good luck.

a quick-change sprocket will allow you the benefit of changing a sprocket to fit your riding conditions.....track......trip....commute, easily. It also makes experimenting with new sprocket ratios less permanent since you only need to remove the sprocket and not the hub/sprocket/carrier to change the tooth count. Also, replacement sprockets for quick-change carriers are cheaper then the one piece style.

Ah, that is pretty cool. I recieved my sprockets and chain in today and was gonna install this weekend, but after seeing DarkDucati's black chain, I might be returning my gold chain back to Jeff for the upgraded black one. It looks cool as hell. Expecially paired with the Black and silver machined Supersprox rear.
