Possible consensus on what to call the Monster generations?

I think, as the world's leading Monster community  [cheeky], we should decide on what to call the 696/1100 bikes and the previous Monsters. It might be practical to reach a consensus and go from there.

Someone here called the S*R bikes the "previous generation Monster". PGM sounds OK to me.

Then the 696/1100 would be the "new generation Monster" - NGM?

Older than S*R might be the "classic generation Monster" - CGM?

Do you think this is a good idea? Suggestions?
A poll might be coming up later.....

Some people call 911..... some people are 911

I agree with the premise, but I propose that we should be more forward-looking.  words like "new" and "previous" will become obsolete when the next gen comes out.  That being said, I don't really have any contributional ideas.

Spidey

I generally refer to them as the 888-based monsters, the ST-based DSS monsters, the S*r and the 696/1100.  See here:

I can't imagine giving each generation an acronym.

Occasionally AFM #702  My stuff:  The M1000SS, a mashed r6, Vino 125, the Blonde, some rugrats, yuppie cage, child molester van, bourbon.

I tend to think of them as:

M1 = first generation = anything older than S*R
M2 = second generation = S*R
M3 = third generation = 696/1100

But that's not as technically accurate as Spidey's classification into 4 categories.

Still, "ST-based DSS Monster" doesn't exactly roll off my tongue, and for anything really technically precise, you'll be referring to model and year anyhow.

Update: Nice FAQ, Spidey.

I agree that "Current", "Next" and "New" are bad descriptions since in 5-10 years, we get to have this confusing conversation all over again.

One problem we have is that we don't really have "generations" as the product lines run in parallel. Take the 695 and S2R for example. This ends up being a tough one.

If I were forced to break them down:
Gen 1 - Full Trellis Carbie bikes.
Gen 2 - Full Trellis FI bikes (included S2R and S4R)
Gen 3 - M696 and M1100

OP, are you a Harley owner...Or past Harley owner?

Seems they got a lock on that line of thinking...at least up to the "Evolution" motor...

Flat Head
Knuckle Head
Pan Head
Shovel Head

All great terms IMO easy to remember and very descriptive.

I think some call the Evolution a "Block Head" but I don't know if that name ever really took off or stuck.

At least Ducatis have two distinct groups...Bevel drives and Belt drives (or as some call them "rubber Ducks"). Nothing specific for Monsters...yet..?

Theres really only 3 different monsters.

as spidey said, the 888 framed, the ST framed and the new framed. THat would mean theres Gen I mosnter( carbed up to 02, or up to 01 if you talk about the 900 flagship model at the time) Gen II monster, 02 up to 08, and the Gen III monster which is the new type 2 piece frame.

anything in between are just small differences.

Hmmmm You could always prefix 'Monster' with the year of manufacture. ie. 2001 Monster S4, 1995 Monster 900 etc.  [beer]

I think the Gen I /full trellis carbies may have a niche contingent looking at their elephant in a Fender PreCBS sort of way...
analogy ends there 'cause the value of the cagivas doesn't double with the 'phant.

I propose:

Gila Monsters - Original 851/888 framed Monsters; 'cause they're as old as the rocks.
Loch Ness Monsters - ST framed (non SSSA); not quite as old as the Gila Monsters.
Cookie Monsters - S*R; pretty young really, and the kiddies love them.
Tentacle Monsters - Alloy Subframed Monsters; 'cause they're so heavily Japanese inspired.

Usage example:

"I saw a Yellow Gila Monster and a Black Loch Ness Monster eastbound on the Bay Bridge this afternoon, I was the guy who waved on the Black and Red Tentacle Monster in lane 3!"
