Or just take him out, let him get drunk, then drive it home.

When my husband first got his BMW 540i sport model (which is for sale, BTW!), he didn't offer to let me drive it and I didn't ask.  He LOVED that car.  This went on for six months, until he needed to take my car, an SUV, camping for the weekend.   ;D  He had no choice but to turn over the keys to me, with the admonishment to be very careful.  Yeah, okay, whatever.

He called me a few hours after he left on my cell phone to check on me, right about the time I hit 110 mph on the freeway.

Me: "Hello?"

Caleb: "What's up?"

Me: "Your car ROCKS!"

Caleb: "What are you DOING???"

Me: "About a hundred and ten at the moment."

Caleb: "#&!$*&#($!* STOP!"

Me (giggling): "Can't.  Sorry honey.  How are ya?"

Needless to say, he was pleased I didn't get so much as a ding in his car while he was gone, but not so pleased about my speed demon side, which he knew full well existed and probably expected nothing less.   [evil]  It's a control thing, though.  If you are going to be with your BF long term, now is the time to break him of it.   ;D  Trust me, it makes life easier in the long run.  You are setting standards right now, whether you know it or not.  Make sure they are standards you can live with.   [thumbsup]

Mal: "That it was manly and impulsive?"

Inara: "Yes, precisely. Only the exact phrase I used was 'don't'."

1) Start engine

2) Position shifter in 1st gear position

3) Increase engine RPM to 4k-5k

4) Dump Clutch resulting in smoky burnout

5) Repeat at each intersection you are forced to stop at

[evil]

[laugh]

It's just a cage.  Drive it like you stole it. (or because...)

+1 to River's comment about setting standards.  Easier to break what you haven't set...

And like all threads on the DMF, no pictures or description of said car....it doesn't exist.

Agreed.  Pics Pics Pics.

Really depends on what kind of car it is.

If it's something awesome, you should drive it, but if it's lame, who cares.

Drive it with him a few times - learn how he likes it to be driven and accept any and all criticism etc.

I have had several relatively highly modified sports cars - i want my wife to drive them and enjoy them (makes the mod budget conversations easier  [evil]) - but not to destroy them.

My current car runs a lot of boost and i had to explain to my wife that you WILL burn the clutch out if you slip it and nail it in traffic.  I also am neurotic that you don't take the car into boost until the oil temps are up - which i *think* she also respects.

I had an M3 before that which had some quirks.

I have some people i will let drive my cars and some i won't - they just need to acknowledge that they will appreciate and respect my machine and my quirks.

then - when you take it out on your own, throw that all out the window and drive it like you stole it.

So, this morning I say to my BF, "I have a confession to make," and I told him about this thread. We got a good laugh out of it, and then he said (more or less), "You're probably a better driver than me anyway, next time we go somewhere in the car together, you drive it."

I think I'll take him out to Pescadero and buy him a drink ...  ;D  ('cause he'll need it by the time we get there  [evil] )
