What sort of HP upgrade potential does the S4R motor have? Can it make the sort of power a 1098 makes with internal engine mods?

I would consider just buying a streetfighter but I really like my Monster.

Which R motor the 998 or the 999 motor?

I know feracci makes a stroker kit for the 999r motor, but I don't know if we can get it to work properly without the larger fuel injectors.

The cheaper and more reliable thing to do would be buy a set of BST's and do the chip, pipe and airbox if you haven't. Your bike still won't be as fast but it will sure feel faster and turn better, and pull harder.  Grin

You can probably find a shop to punch that motor out and make more power but you will loose some long term reliability and will have huge costs. And the streetfighter will still have a more modern chassis then we have. I have a slipper in my Rs, and I'm going with BST's when I can that should be enough for me.

Well mine is an 05, so isnt it a 996 motor? I did think about BST wheels and other upgrades. Just wondering what type of engine potential my current motor has. Stock is only 113hp. I have the Arrow CF pipes, An ECU would be in the future along with an air box. But thats just bolt on stuff.

If you don't already have a full exhaust system, open airbox (or DP airbox lid) and performance ECU, you can add those for about a 14-17 HP addition.  I did that to my '07 S4Rs, then met with my race sponsor (DucPond Motosports owner Donnie Unger) to consult on what else to do.  He recommended, and I had him: install Pistal high compression pistons, port the heads, 3-angle valve job, and degree the stock cams.  We haven't dyno'ed my bike, but he has sone this to other 998 testastretta engines and gotten an additional 10-12 horsepower, plus sharper throttle response.   My experience has been that these mods, coupled with BST carbon fiber wheels (as someone has already suggested) transform the motorcycle.

The S4Rs was fun to ride before  [moto] ; now it is totally captivating and pure evil.  Evil   I am going to get arrested  Police and thrown in jail one day for the things this bike makes me do (and I am 51 years old, was an MSF safety instructor for 14 years, and get plenty of track time) and I'll be smiling so hard  Grin  that my face will hurt and I won't care that I'm in jail.

When he got in a Streetfighter demo, I asked him if I should avoid riding it, for fear that I would stop loving or would want to trade in my S4Rs.   bang head   He said not to worry, havng ridden my S4Rs and the Streetfighter himself, that my S4Rs was way more fun to ride - that no stock bike, no matter how powerful, would ever have the sharpness and immediacy of throttle response that my S4Rs has.  He did say I was welcome to ride the Streetfighter, which I may yet to this weekend.   waytogo

Meanwhile, my friend Tom has a 996SPS Superbike that he dispairs of ever feeling the same way about, because I have "ruined him" (his words) by letting him ride my S4Rs!   chug

If you don't have an O2 messing things up, then open the airbox and add a PCIII and get it dyno tuned. That is gonna be the least expensive way to gain max HP for a stock engine. Then the wheels for power-to-weight ratio improvement, then it's on to big bucks for internal engine work.... really depends on how much you wanna keep the monster I guess...

Interesting,

One thing that does not scare me is to swap motors. The possibility of picking up an S4RS motor Or "T" would be an option. I'd have to do some research on compatibility issues but Ive done engine swaps in cars, and put a 5 speed Tremec transmission in my 70 Cuda. I can figure out how to do a simple engine swap on a bike.

would the newer S4RS motor pretty much be a direct swap? it would be much easier to do all the engine upgrades to a motor that isnt in a bike then put it in.

Mine is an 05. There is no O2 sensor. I guess finding a place that can dyno tune the bike would be next

You would need the/a exhaust system as well, ports are different on Rs/Rt motor.

Not sure if the Rs/Rt would fit under your tank, along with the battery and electronics.
The under-tank packaging on the Rs/Rt is *very* tight.

They have map downloads on line. That would basically fit what I have now. Would i still need a dyno tune?

IMO:

PCIII + canned map will be better than stock.

Dyno tune will make it even better, but is dependent on dyno operator skill.

+1 to Tim's post.  I'd start with a testa motor and go from there.

S4RS/999 motors are really a 998.... a 999 motor is a 104mm bore, and capable of a whole lot more because of it.  Hell, the 05 999R motor with a stroke job, some mild porting and a full exhaust + blueprint will make in the mid-low 150's at the wheel.  waytogo

Newer throttle bodies
Nemesis ECU
Custom exhaust
Port and polished heads, and long with smoothing as much as feasible the intake and exhaust to head transitions.
Chopped, balanced and polished crank
Higher comp pistons (if available)
Timing and dyno work
Light fly wheel
Light clutch assy

I know I'm missing something... But that should put a big dent in the bank...

The testastretta (narrowhead) 998 S4Rs motor has completely different cylinderhead dimensions than those of the desmoquattro 916/996 engine family.  That's why the S4Rs has a completely different airbox and fuel tank than that of the orginal S4 and S4R Monsters.
