Hello,
I am going to be n San Diego from July 8th to the 17th and then head up to Portland. The San Diego part of my trip is business, then i will be joining my wife and some friends in Portland for a few days before i return to home in Baltimore. While in San Diego i will be staying in the tourist trap that you all know as the Gas Lamp district without a vehicle.  I thought about shipping my bike so i would have it the entire time while i am in San Diego, as i will have off the weekend of the tenth. However, it seems shipping will cost between $900 to $1200 for a round trip shipment of my bike, and there is no guarantee my bike will ever make it. Since it would cost me $200 to fly to Portland i thought about renting a bike and riding it in two days.
Any thoughts?
Any thing cool happening while i will be in San Diego?

Thanks,
RB

I have rented from these guys twice

http://www.rentaducati.com/

The cool thing is that you pick up and drop off the bike at the San Diego Ducati dealership GP Motorcycles

http://gpmotorcycles.com/  about 5 minutes from the gaslamp. (they used to be within walking distance, but just moved in May)

All in all a painless experience

i saw that and actually they are running a special on the 696 rental. It seems to be cheaper then any other bike rental available.
The best idea would be to take the bike one way to Portland, which wouldn't work for the Ducati rental.

Thanks Statler, i wouldn't take a beer intended for you anyhow...i promise.

I would definitely like to catch a few local bands while i am there. The indie/rock/punk type stuff. I was a huge Rocket from the Crypt fan when they were around, that is sorta my speed. Any clubs/bars anyone can recommend....Casbah? Is there an online paper, or site that lists the local stuff?...City Paper...

Plenty of clubs in the GasCramp area to keep you busy.

The Casbah is closer to Little Italy (which BTW has a local Ducati get together every 2nd Thursday of the month, July 9th in this case,  check here for details: http://www.docsd.com/ )

Since I just turned 60 I can't keep up with the cool kids (except while riding  Grin) but I have been here since 1970 so I pretty much know the who/what/where in SD. My son who is 26 lives in PB, I'll ask him for suggestions when I see him later today

i will definitely be at the second Thursday meet.

So far i have only found EagleRider to have one-way service from San Diego to Seattle or Bend OR, and a 3 day rental is about $350 before 'other fees'.  The price is fine since it will cost about 200 bones to fly, i just wish there was a location closer to Portland (Bend and Seattle are 3 hours away) and the only bikes to choose from are HD's from the San Diego location.

Scratch that....one way fees are above the normal rental fee (between $375 drop off in Bend, or $550 drop in Seattle) OUCH!!!!
I might as well ship my own bike...anyone have a reliable shipping company they would recommend?

thanks for all the help
