I have a totally stupid question. I have had my monster for a year now. It's a 2000 M750. I ONLY ride it around NYC and have never taken it out of the city. I am about to go on my first long (ish) trip (only 3 hours highway each way) and I am wondering; What's my range?
I plan to leave with a full tank of gas and stop twice (stretch every hour). I will be checking the tank obviously. But was just wondering so that I can better plan...
Any input would be greatly welcome!

Sounds good! Thanks for the help. Like I said, I am used to only riding around the city at distances of 5 - 10 miles at a time tops. So, had no idea.

You should get much better mileage on the highway than you do in the city.

I tested the range of my low fuel light once. Won't do that again. It is better that you stop sooner than your bike stop later.

750 steel tank?
140miles on the highway easily. so figure time to get out of NYC, your safe up to 130 miles. then after that you should start looking for a station within 25miles.
if you are a very gentle rider, you can push it to 145miles. before you start looking.
120miles is playing it safe.

My S4R, although not the same bike, will do about 100miles or so before the light comes on. Just fill it all the way up. Good luck on the ride .. oh and dont forget to reset your odometer so you know how far you've gone.

Thanks for all the advice! I am excited about my first real trip. Riding in nyc traffic is exhausting and stressful. This should be a nice ride [moto]
I wish I had more time to do things like this. I have a 1 year old at home and a busy job so I just haven't had time...

my 02 750 will get 150 on the hwy before i have no choice but sto stop for gas.
on a recent trip an 04 620 (plastic tank) was getting 120 mi before a fill up at 80mph on the hwy.
you should be able to go at least 120mi before you have to stop.
ohh, and 3 hrs is doable with 1 stop for gas. stretch out then.

Since I ran out of gas on my first bike, I made a conscious decision to reset my tripometer every time I fill up. It helps me to figure out mileage and range and really has become second nature. Even if you don't do it every time, I would recommend doing it for a while just to monitor - city and freeway driving too.

Your ass will be screaming well before you drain the second tank.
Get thee some foam ear plugs before you hit the highway, the wind will be screaming as soon as you pass 65.
Good plan to stretch, and get the blood flowing before you remount.
Just spent 13 hours between Friday and Sunday on my 05 620, aside from the agony asserted by my stock saddle I was fine.
I used about 1.6gals every 100mi of somewhat lawful rural riding thru VT & NH.
Enjoy spending some quality time with the Duc!

When the fuel light comes on you have 20 - 27 miles to go before you run out of gas. That s .9 gallons of reserve at that point. If the light comes on and you find that you have managed 30 more miles, start walking...
