Napoleon Baren problem
«
on:

'98 Monster 900. Is the internal diameter on the handle bars smaller than normal? The "universal fit" Napoleon mirrors will not fit.
(Is nothing on these bikes straight forward?
) As always, any ideas are appreciated. As is any criticism for not seeing the obvious.

Yeah, the m900s have the aluminum bars that have a smaller inner diameter than most bars. You can try drilling out the bars but it requires a really big bit. I forgot what size I used but it helps a lot if you have a drill press too.
Someone else might chime in with other suggestions but that's what I found.

I believe I would try to take stock of the mirror inserts before I drilled out the bar. I assume that the mirrors work on opposing wedges. I would think that the handlebar is a certain thickness by design. Drilling it out might make it weaker.

I did think about drilling at first. I guess now would be a good time to get a nice black handle bar. I mean, I really do need it to use my mirrors. And I do need my mirrors to drive...so, I guess I'll should do the responsible thing and purchase one today. [off to rizoma] [moto]

Rizomas might have the smaller inner diameter also.
I had the same problem and solved it with a trip to the hardware store. There is a tab on the metal part of the mirror that goes into the bar that may need to be filed down, then you need some rubber tubing, a bolt and a flange nut.

Trim down the rubber inserts and either buy new nuts or grind down the flanges on the old nuts.
In short, make the mirrors fit the bar, not the other way around.

Great advice all! Thanks for the extra set of eyes, I didn't think about modding the mirrors.

I've had the same problem with my CycleCat bars.
I replaced the rubber piece with a piece of fuel line, and a nut with out the flange and voila.
Like Howie said, don't modify the bars, modify the mirror.

kind of related. I bent the big machine screw that holds the mirror arm to the bar insert. Anyone know what type of screw it is so I could replace it? I can't seem to find the right one at the hardware store (found a nut that works, but not the matching screw).

for reference, 8x1.25 30mm socket head cap screw, stainless steel.
Nick gave me a line on a REAL hardware store. Dug around a little and found what I needed and bought some spares in stainless and mild steel.
