2002 M620 Dark ie

« on: May 20, 2008, 06:09:56 PM »

I'm considering removing the emissions can from my '02 M620ie.
My questions are:
A) What will this do to my gas mileage?
2) Will I need to do anything else for the bike to continue running properly(ie: change the ECU Etc.)?
III) If I do it, should I disconnect the hoses at the cylinders, or just tuck them in the frasme and let them hang?

Any info will be appreciated.

To be perfectly honest the biggest upgrade will be in the looks, any other changes you will be hard pressed to notice
I would buy a Monster Emissions Removal Kit from TPO.  You need something such as the Y-splice tube to connect your vent tubes.
I would not recommend just tucking the the hoses.

A) nothing. it doesnt weigh enough to reduce overall weight by that much

here is a quick how to. covers the other questions pretty much

1 - follow hose from emissions cannister to gas tank. disconnect this hose from the emissions cannister and run it down the rear of the engine parallel to the other hose you see running back there from the tank.

2 - follow the other hose from the cannister to a "t-fitting" that splices it into two hoses. follow each of these hoses to a fitting in your intake manifolds. loosen the clamps that secure the hoses to these bleeder fittings and remove the hoses. then unscrew the bleeder fittings from the manifolds.

3 - plug the holes in the intake manifolds the those bleeder fittings left with short M5 bolts. use high-temp locktite to secure them. just "snug" tight. don't over torque 'em.

4 - unbold the cannister bracket and toss that useless P.O.S. in the garbage....

Maybe you should save it in case a cop pulls you over.  Even if you do get pulled over a cop probably wont notice but better to be safe then have to buy another emissions can!  But yeah, the TPO kit made things nice and easy for me.

TPO Emission removal kit

+1

Did mine last summer on a '06 620 with the TPO kit. The kit is cheap and really simple to use.  Best thing about it is they give you the spacers to go between the rearset and the frame.

good idea, you can keep it in your tank bag.......... laughingdp

sorry, dont mean to be too much of an azz.....
unless you live in CA, the emissions can is not a required item.
and even in CA, i would bet that the officer wouldn't know that it was missing

frame spacers?  Huh?  they don't really seem like a necessary item.

I bought two M5 bolts from the hardware store, and used the T-fitting that ran to the intakes to join my two vent tubes together.

overall cost of mod? like a dollar. plus beers.

Canister bracket fit between the frame and the 2 rear bolts of the rearset on my bike.  When you remove the braket there is a gap between the frame and the rearset - the front bolt is held out farther to account for the braket space.  It may be a different configuration on your bike.  The kit also comes with the proper size/thread set screws to bolt into the intakes.  With out these you have to leave a piece of tubing on the intake nipple and pulg it with a bolt or silicone.

05 620... I just bolted the pegs back to the frame, and had no issues w/fitting or clearance w/the high pipes I ended up running...

local hardware store carries metric fasteners  Wink so like I said, cheap mod.

Just removed my canister yesterday. My only cost was some high-temp Loctite and 30 minutes of time. Looks so much better without that thing beside the horizontal cylinder head. waytogo

Some models have the emissions canister tucked behind the right rearset. A far better place than out in front for everyone to see it's glorious ugliness.

i am alway nervous when it comes to taking things off of my motor. so let me understand this. i buy this kit and remove the ugly black box on the left side of my motor right next to the cylinder.  what is that thing supposed to do? will i have to remap? i mean i don't understand if its there in the first place, it must do something right? I mean i have already done a full system with a pc3 mapped and dyno'ed and i hope to be over with the motor mods for now, but this seems to fall into the cosmetic category. just curious.
i get scared that i will screw up something. Huh?
