No Monster of my own, but my wife has an '09 696

WWW
« on: July 17, 2009, 08:50:26 PM »

My wife has been looking for a bike for about a year. Her prejudices run toward nakeds, so we've been looking at Hyosung GT250's, Suzuki Gladiuses, etc. For whatever reason, there's practically nothing along those lines on the used market. What we have seen has been really beat up.

She finally agreed to try looking at used Monsters. We looked at a couple that were really sad. We drove to Boston to look at one that was advertised as never having been dropped. The right handlebar, grip, and lever were all ground down from having slid along asphalt, the brake pedal was bent at 45 degrees, and the left grip was off a dirtbike or something. Both sad and scary!

Earlier today we went to look at a 696 advertised as having 1,200 miles and in perfect condition. What do you know? It was! So, she finally found her bike.

My problem now is that after having ridden a 696 last fall and again a few times recently, I'm really liking them. The ergos just work better for me (and I've had both City and stock bars on my 620), I like the extra zip, and the styling that I initially didn't like now looks great to me. There's nothing wrong with the 620, but I'm a bit envious of the 696.

Thus, it is starting to look as if my 620 is heading for the block while I hunt for a 696 for myself.

IIRC that was her bike and he stole it. Grin

Because that's basically a lousy way to treat someone I love.

I don't want her hand-me-downs, and she doesn't have to put up with mine. There's no law of nature that says dudes get newer/bigger/costlier and chicks get older/smaller/cheaper.

She prefers the 696. While she was reasonably happy looking at 620's or considering 695's, her eyes lit up when she sat on a 696. We will have been married 29 years come January and she hasn't buried my dismembered body in the garden yet. The least I can do in return is buy her the bike she wants.

However, if you know of a good, used 1100S for under $8,000 I'll happily take it! For my skill level and experience coupled with the length of the riding season here and my call schedule, anything more expensive than that is not reasonable for me. I'll probably never come close to using the full capacity of my 620, let alone an S*R, 1100S, Streetfighter or whatever.

+1.

You guys will have a great time on two 696's.

My wife bought a Hyosung GT250, and while it's a good beginner bike, it is too tall for her, so she's dropped it twice now at a stop.

Have fun with the 696's, and post pics when you get them!

I agree completely. I'll PM you my address for delivery.  Grin

I'd thought of that. I may go look at a white bike tomorrow. White plastics would look pretty nice on the red frame and red plastics on the black frame.

you guys may never go back in the house again.

There are some activities that aren't very rewarding on a Monster. I can think of at least one that'll probably get us back in the house.

Cooking bacon. Smart man-it's way better indoors.

Besides, I"m afraid that when I lean over to flip it, I'll scrape the tank against the grill and mess it up. Then there's the grease spatter on the faceshield making it hard to see, my gloves interfering with the tongs, and so on.
