Right now the schedule is:

Friday, July 31st: Leave NYC for Philly, pick up bike, ride to DC
Saturday, August 1: Head out of DC, ride Skyline Drive and some BlueRidge Parkway, sleep somewhere near the Gap
Sunday, August 2: DRAGON  Evil
Monday, August 3: Across TN and sleep somewhere near Memphis
Tuesday, August 4: To the mountains of Arkansas
Wednesday, August 5: Dallas
Either August 5 or early August 6: Load up the bikes and trailer it to Abiquiu, New Mexico
August 6: Day of rest in NM/maybe some riding/ possible drinkfest slumber-party with NM-crew
Friday, August 7: Ride up to Ouray!
Saturday, August 8: DITR
Sunday, August 9: DITR
Monday, August 10: Drive back to NM
Tuesday, August 11: Long, miserable haul back to Houston/longer miserable hall back to Louisiana

Yes, that IS truly epic.

For sleeping near the Gap, try Franklin, NC. Me, yuu, and Lr8tr stayed there when we went and got to ride 28 to the Gap. 28 is a freaking awesome road and nowhere near as crowded.

If you want to stay closer to the Gap and miss half of 28, try Silva or Bryson City.

JourneyMan might have more suggestions, he lives outside of Asheville and knows the area.

ooooh thanks for the suggestions, JBub! I'll PM JourneyMan right now for tips and we'll definitely try to ride 28. Cops are no good, although that one cop in the Gap on the Aprilia looks hot - I might just "have" to get pulled over and "get out of it"  Police Wink

I was just wondering if it makes sense to stay at virginia tech at all. its not really near the gap at all, and its not too far from DC either. I dunno how that fits into the schedule. Let me know what you think.

thanks for the swift return of our Platypus, man. we were afraid you'd kidnapped him for "protection"  cheeky
Believe me, I thought about it - especially considering my kickstand broke and rashed up Fenix the 1st time I rode without Platy  Embarrassed

Indeed.

Me, yuu, and Lr8tr went through there and loved it.

The Goldwings in front of us tried to straighten the road out and ignore the lane markings.  Undecided

Be sure to stay in your lane! There's series of photos on killboy that show how 18 wheelers (and other cars) can hide in the corners.

Tech is out of the way... and you'll not be able to make good time from there, going west - so keep that in mind.  From Franklin back to DC via slab was 12 or so hours when you factor in gas, food, etc - and that was basically a slab run.  Aside from the slab through the Smokies which was epically senic at sun rise (yes sun rise) it was straight and boring slab all the way back to DC and it was a full days ride.

Going via the BRP, it might be a two day trip *if* you want to be at the Gap early.  If you're up early on the 1st and make it a long day, you'll probably be withing a couple hours of the gap by dusk.

Honestly, You'll regret not coming with us. This is probably the last chance you'll have to do something like this. You have one more summer left before you graduate and you'll probably spend that in some internship. When will you have the time and opportunity to do this again?
