As another option, I just had these put on:
http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=5000&L2=10&L3=&L4=&item=TUC_31-0800_G
Dunlop RoadSmart
I do about 35 miles a day all freeway riding. I had the big flat spot but also worn down the sides from the few times I hit the hills. 7500 miles on the stock tires. I'm really happy with these after about 600 miles.

FYI-
I would consider 'chicken strips' the untouched rubber on the outside of the tire (implying you cant lean over very very), not the flat wear in the middle from straight roads
ahhh. gotcha.

i just put some Avon Storms on my 900SS and really like them so far.

I just put on some Pilot Roads on my S4Rs - much flatter then the old Pilot Powers but on the commute to work this morning I felt no noticeable difference. I've seen claims of 6K miles on the rear so we'll see.
I got them from Comp Acc for $219 shipped.
