Get a Hurley and show them traditional Irish sports...

I find it amusing that the header image features a guy tossing a caber and a piper... both holding origins to the highlands of... Scotland

Get a little Gaelic Football in the mix too.

I know, your observation pretty much summed up my rant.

There's a big 'Shamrock Fest' that goes on here roughly St Pats time.  OF course you get tons of people with no celtic blood wearing green about - but at least the decency to not put itself out as a cultural experience... other than a drinking one.  Though it annoys me that they consistently use the Dropkick Murphys for a music bed in their ads... I'd totally go to see them - but they have NEVER played that event.

On the other hand, there's a highland games that does it proper (and MUCH less attended) - Always amusing to hear the 'look out!' and watch bystanders scatter from the landing site from a miss thrown hammer.

Maybe you could dress in 1850s costume and pretend to be a period actor advocating the positions of the American Party (the Know-Nothings). That could be funny.

I am not sure, I don't think I've ever been to one's outside of Greek Festivals.

but those are always held at their Church and have been about as authentic as you can get, at least the three I have been to.

There was a Greek festival a block away from my shop...
I dont know how authentic it was...do Greek people really shout OPA!!! every 40 seconds???

GAAN

it seems to me that authentic would be subjective

if it is being thrown by the Irish then regardless what happens it seems it would be an authentic irish festival

if it is being thrown by non Irish and yet was strictly period specific

would it still be authentic?

what effect do the people in attendence have on the authenticity of the festival?

lets say it is a period specific festival thrown by the Irish and is authentic to the 9's

but

the only guests in attendence to enjoy it are drunken Mongols

is the festival not authentic at that point?

lets say the festival is thrown by clueless Americans with no concept of what Irish really is but the people in attendence are all Irish from Ireland? does their demeanor make it authentic?

First of all, I live right across the street from it. So I deal with make the beast with two backsers taking my parking spots, acting like drunk idiots, etc etc. I try to go out of town this weekend, but didn't work this year.

try living on a parade route during Mardi Gras in New Orleans.  It goes on for more than one weekend and there are WAY more drunken idiots...

As for authenticity, I'm sure these Irish Americans are portraying what their grandparents, or great grandparents taught/told them about Irish culture.  It is the same thing with Italian Americans.  The culture that we hold onto is not a portrayal of current cultures and conditions, but of the culture and times when the immigrants left.

I wish you would have posted this up sooner, I could have made a fortune selling sunscreen outside of the festival.

or University of Notre Dame gear. Everyone has that shit on. (I grew up in South Bend).

I find it so funny irish people go to ND because of the school, reputation of being an "irish school"

ND was founded by French Priests  [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

how in any way is that close to irish heritage?
