Author Topic: Vapor - Oil Temp pickup?  (Read 2159 times)

In the process of removing my stock instruments and installing a TT Vapor. Only wall I have hit so far is how to retain oil temp? Trail Tech sells plugs that accept there temp probe but where to put said probe?

Dose anyone have any experience with adapting the stock oil temp outputs to read on the Vapor. I looked at the wiring diagram and it shows one wire coming off the oil temp sensor. That a ground & a + go into the stock oil temp meter. I am assuming that it needs a separate positive to run the back light, but want to be sure before I start cutting into the TT harness.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Well I got results but not what I has hoped for.

Hooked the TT up to the pos and sensor wire coming off the oil temp. After a few min of warm up so was reading 300°+
-Looks like the TT and the stock temp meter are regulated differently (to be expected I guess).


Next series of questions...
Where is the oil temp sensor located on an M900 lump ?
Anyone know what the thread size and pitch is ?

any chance you could post your stock ducati wiring diagram?

I assume that the stock temp sensor is the single wire running into the threaded sensor looking bolt right next to the oil fill cap.

Really I thought that was the oil pressure switch. Unless it controls both functions..

If that's not it I guess I need to pull my lower cowl to try to find it.

Normally it screws in the middle of the wire oil filter thing, just below and forward of the oil level site glass.

Yup found it when I was doing so work the other day. Now I need to find out it the thread pitch of the TT pickup is the same as the Ducati unit. For some reason I think it's a standard thread, They sell an long m6x1.0mm oil temp pick up but it's $25. If I can get away with re-threading the water temp pickup I'll do that.


... Next oil change that is.

I wish I could tell you the thread pitch, but it seems to change a fair amount from year to year.

And I'm not sure the water temp pickup is suitable (maybe it is)

I'd just worry about putting a sensor that's designed for 40-240 degrees into an environment where it's going up to 300+ degrees.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in here and tell you I'm worrying about nothing  Grin

I'm pretty sure the temp pickup is build for it... They sell adapters to allow the pickup to fit your oil drain plug.

Probably should check with TT just to be on the safe side, it's always fun to talk to one of there techs.

Well I decided to do my oil change a few miles early. After letting all the black gold drip out I pulled the screen and the temp sensor out of the motor. I checked the threads on the ducati temp pickup then they were M10x1mm The TT pickup's thread pitch and size is too close for an adapter to work. Looked like I was going to pick up the TT M6 pick-up and machine my own adapter. After looking at the TT oil temp pickup I thought to my self that the threads looked almost exactly the same and the diameters were very close. The TT unit is a standard thread pitch but with a little convincing will go right into the oil filter screen. After I got it in there I took it back out and the stock unit threaded right back in.

Now all I need to do is get another filter and some oil tomorrow and I can test this out.
