The only rum sold in the US is comparable to rubbing alcohol. A nice dark rum can be drunk straight up, especially nice when smoking a good quality cigar.

Actually, I have.  We've hit almost all the islands and had the local varieties.. Pyrat from Anguilla was one of the best (IMHO), but it still just lacks the quality of character that a sipping whiskey needs. 

Old Man Guavaberry from Sint Maartens is very good too, but very hard to get due to the dutch export laws. 

Rum is really a mixer.

I agree on the last two.  Unaged tequila is like drinking battery acid, whereas I could sip anejo tequila all day.  Even the reposado stuff is drinkable.

Gin.. meh.. can't sip that.  Don't care how good it is.  I mix it.

Good gin in a good martini is the closest I come to sipping the stuff (which is pretty close, but not quite -- I don't have a pathological fear of vermouth, but I don't overdo it, either). Real Dutch Jenever, on the other hand, is a totally different matter.

I've never been able to find it in the states and have been hoarding the last couple of shots of the bottle of Korenwijn I brought back from Amsterdam years ago for a really, really special occasion.

reposada is only aged a year.  anejos is aged at least 3..
