So Yesterday I did some relocation and frame cleanup with C_Bartlett (He did almost everything while I just kinda hung around) and the finished product came out amazing. He welded some custom bracket to the frame and we were able to get rid of that nasty useless box under the seat and rerouted some hoses and added a breather.

Mayor Props to C_Bartlett and his welding skilllzzz, the force is strong with that one...

Chipo, very nice work, the cleaning job is great..!!

on the breather, I had it at the same place, and decided to put it just deeper behind the frame. The things is that your leg will press it into the frame and it will dent the filter or scratch the frame...

Nice work... I really like the brackets and grinding job.  I want to do this but the jury is still out on the breather filter mod.  Tell us if you notice any oil or change in performance with the breather filter.

I have not noticed any drop in performance. Bike runs as beautifully as usual. Of course, i have a 695 that isn't pushing more than 80 bhp. Maybe it could be a factor for the bigger bikes as the crank will definitely produce more pressure/vacuum in a bigger engine, but I haven't noticed any problems...

The main thing that this breather does is increase crankcase ventilation. And as per this source http://www.ducati-upnorth.com/tech/breather.php

Crankcase ventilation is used for three reasons:

It reduces crankcase pressures to nearly atmospheric pressure in order to avoid oil leaks from seals and gaskets.

It reduces crankcase pressures at the bottom of the pistons to provide an increase in the differential pressure across the piston compression rings, and consequently provide an increase of torque and horsepower. A larger differential pressure across the piston oil rings also aids in control of oil consumption.

It reduces pumping losses. In a running engine, the size and shape of the crankcase boundary changes with the movement of the pistons. Ventilating the crankcase reduces parasitic horsepower losses involved in compressing and moving this air volume about, so net power output is increased.


I read the entire thread and what I got form it was that the stock system was best because it increased the capacity the most and removed all the oil mist possibility. While I see hte advantage of this, the oil mist is almost negligible as very very little is actually released and if you find your rear tyre full of oil from the breather, there is something very wrong happening in your bike...

I would say go for it. I don't really see it afecting performance for any aircooled engine  Grin Evil
