Two weeks ago the brake light/rear turnsignals went out on my m696.  Replaced the fuse and everything was fine.  For a day.  Went out again and I couldn't figure out the problem other than it's something BEFORE the tail kit.  So I drove it 2 hours to the dealership and dropped it off.  A week later, they said it was the wiring harness touching the vertical cylinder and grounding out and they had it fixed.  I went and picked it up and half an hour into my ride home......... bang head  I turned around and took it back.   I just talked to them again today and they said they are replacing the wiring harness.  It'll only take a few hours to install when it gets in         IN TWO WEEKS!!!  Someone kill me.  Please.

If having a toy warrantied and it taking about five weeks to get you back to new is all your worries, you're having a pretty sweet month.   Enjoy the rest of the summer riding a cool motorcycle and smile.

I'm sure he'll enjoy what's left of the summer when he gets his bike back. I know I'd be pissed too...

I was pretty annoyed when my 696 had electrical issues.
Changing the harness fixed it. Good luck.

I have worked at several dealerships (auto) as a mechanic and I can tell you this.  99 times out of 100 (or more) replacing a harness because of an electrical problem is a lazy, worthless, no nothing mechanics way of fixing something he can't/won't find.

Even more so on a motorcycle with no body work

i told him the use of the brake is what blew the fuse every time.  He said he  couldn't find anything so he was gonna replace the wiring harness.  Sounds like a shot in the dark to me.

The only possibilities that come to mind 1. ducati pays jack to trace a harness and repair a short. 2. appearance ,being as your bike is fairly new a harness that has been cut open and retaped is usually apparent if your looking closely its usually possible to tell due to differences in tape brands or types of shrink tubing 3. this is a ducati recommended repair for a known issue.

while I agree it's a known (and recall initiated) issue, it is a lazy man's way out.  I wouldn't want the split harness to be the permanent fix (on a warrantied bike), but would definitely be greatful to the shop that could get me reliably back on my bike until the harness came in.

Ducati do not pay for "Investigation time" you get the price of the part credited back to you and a tiny amount of Labour, that is why most dealers don't want to spend any time trying to find the fault, they get no money to pay for the time, So if it takes a dealer 4 hours to find a fault, that is all lost time, gone, never to be recovered.
So in this case with Ducati's warranty system, it is worth more to the dealer to install a new loom and at least get some labour cost's back from Ducati.

It's cheaper and easier with Ducati's warranty system to keep throwing parts at it.
Ask me how I know.... Tongue

And here is a classic case of how little Money you would get for a warranty repair, even though the Fault is caused by Ducati during the design and construction of the bike!!....

1098/1098s/1098r, Known Regulator issue, Proximity to Exhaust cause damage to regulator, Repair: Replace Reg and Reg Mount with new part with Heat shielding, Strip off fairing/body work, remove battery/ECU/Reg/Reg case, Install new Reg Casing and shield, install new Reg, reinstall, hook up DDS and clear fault codes, Reinstall Fairing and Bodywork, Road Test.
1 hour start to finish on average.
Ducati used to Credit back the parts and pay $30 Labour for that job!
Oh, and let's not forget it would take Ducati 90 days to give you that credit, and they reserved the right to not pay you for a claim if they didn't agree with the repair, even if the repair fixed the fault, and even if you were authorized by the Ducati Warranty manager to do the repair!

Wow that's gotta suck for the dealer.  If I have an electrical or software problem under warranty I get paid for how long it takes to fix.  I tend to lose more on customer pay diagnosis on difficult problems versus warranty.
