You're right, the state wouldnt...
But then again, they dont handle bank robberies. You'd be much better off robbing a convenience store or five (for the zard). What? Im just sayin!

Speaking of exhausts...
Ever since we installed the termi slip-ons (with ECU) my bike smells rich...
Anyone got any thoughts?

If those stock cans are anything like the ones from my old S2R (and I believe they are) then there is a lot more than just removing a plate. My old cans had a "three chamber" gas routing system that had the exhaust gasses going back and forth through the cans at different directions. You can core them out (do a search for exhaust coring), but you will need a drimel, a few hours, a couple of friends and several beers.
well i have the dremal, hours, and plenty of beer... but friends willing to drive to Makaha and help me destroy my stock cans are in short supply. i wonder if my plasma cutter would make the job any easier?
but then again

it will sound louder,
if you remove the cats then that would lower the temp.
but as far as performance increase on a lambda system(closed loop) i doubt any better, probably worse.
the dp kit is all about the ecu, the pipes alone are only a small part on these new E3 bikes.
hurting the performance of the bike is the last thing i want to do even if it does roast my ass a bit less and sound really cool at the same time... what to do? what to do?

so ride out a bit toward civilization
plasma would be quick, but I imagine trying to clean up all the melty bits to make it look nice would be tricky

I think you may be missing a key point here, but maybe not. The cans on the 848/1098/1198 aren't built like the aforementioned cans where the guys cut out the baffles with a hacksaw and dremel. There are catalytic converters at the exhaust inlet side and then baffles at the rear. Basically going after both items might net you a big mess that does nothing and may even look ugly as sin. By the way, I haven't noticed any significant performance gains or running characteristic changes after having changed my pipes. It might be a tad freer flowing but the big change is the sound (noise, if you ask those hikers on the side of the road up on Tantalus
). You could run a set of aftermarket cans without changing the ECU and save the stock pipes for if and when you sell the bike. Then sell the aftermarket cans separately. I don't think hack jobs are worth it.

ok after care full consideration to every ones input many hours of research online i have come to the conclusion that my 848 is just too nice of a bike to do any back yard hack jobs on. so
since i cant afford to buy a decent set of slip ons till well after the holidays i am just going to have to deal with the heat on my ass for the next 6 months. besides i am sure my neighbors will appreciate my bike being a bit quieter for as long as possible seeing as how i leave for work sometimes at 5 am.

it shouldn't be to rich, you have the semins ecu, which only allows basic reflashing, it still retains a semi closed loop so the bike still corrects using the o2 sensors.
give me a call if it really is a concern to you.

ok i know i said i wouldnt hack up my bike in the back yard, but i was wondering if i would hurt performance at all if all i did was remove this piece from the can. the cats would still be there and all of the chambers, but the bike would sound a bit deeper.
what do you think?

It will sound a bit deeper but maybe not as much as you might imagine. Then again, it might get you exactly what you are looking for given your 0500 departure time. The reason being the restrictive diameter of the inner piping. Granted you are removing the exhaust flow turn around, which helps a lot, but there is still the inner pipe. I can explain more later, with pics perhaps, and give you some dB measurements I made. Oh, you won't hurt the performance.
If you watch eBay you might be able to pick up some stock cans for cheap and work on those. That way you can always have your original cans just in case.

That, in effect, is how we cored the cans on my old S2R. Removing that piece will deepen the sound a fair amount without making it silly loud. Give it a shot and see what you think.
One thing to note though, your cans will still be heavy as all hell. One of the bigger advantages of getting the Termis, or any other aftermarket kit for that matter, is shedding the weight of the stock cans and lowering the bike's center of gravity.

I dropped off the fuel pump and a Rizoma Clip-On Bars Kit (thought about installing them myself and figured if I don't install them right I would eat $h!t...so I'll leave the install to the professionals)...now I can't wait to get the bike back! (I was told it might be out tomorrow?!?!?)
Also on an off topic question (which Teddy has already answered) how much would you guesstimate might be charged for fitting a set of wheels...with the rear wheel measuring 5.5" (instead of the 4.5" stock wheel)?
Thanks!
