About the "practice" in sliding; some things you only learn by doing.
However, years ago I read Keith Code's "Twist of the Wrist" and he does cover HOW to act in a fall. Unfortunately I've had a few occasions to practice what I read. Fortunately I HAD read it, and it help a great deal.
In short (from memory):
1) Gear up.
2) When sliding, it's best to be on your back and as spread out as possible [EDIT: Oh, and relax; really, try to relax].
3) When you've stopped sliding, count to 10 before getting up because you're probably still sliding about 10 mph (the first time I tried this I forgot to count to 10 and WAS still sliding about 10 mph; ripped my gloves off when I put my hands down to get up).
Of course the best thing is to NOT hit anything other than the pavement. Unfortunately that's not always in our power during these moments. Obviously that's easier said than done, and far easier to do at the track.
Glad you're okay, save the sore whatever.
