So, you havn't been there yet.

You might want to run those places by the local Austinites.  Depending on the area..it could be a not-so-good area..or the traffic to get anywhere isn't fun.

It seems like you're coming from NY though, right?  So the traffic might not be so bad for you.  But, Austin def. has to work on the highways around there!  I have never been on a highway that had so many stoplights as the 360!

Regardless..Austin is a cool place to be!!   waytogo

BTW..keep property taxes in mind.  $140K house won't be too bad at the end of the year though..about $4500 cash you'll have to save up.

i was out in austin back in march.. heading over there on the 18 to look at 4 places.. yea most of the taxes were in the range of 1k to 4k...  yes traffic here sucks.. we're aren't going look at the 1.6 acre house due to maybe foundation problems and comute.. they said something like 4 tolls maybe..  yea, not many places have worse traffic then ny or pothole filled highways..

out of bout 12 we looked at.. we settled on top 2.. both in ceder creak (sp).. #1 which we are going to try and get is a 4 bed, pretty spacious 1 floor 2 car all stone house.. back yard has a stone deck with stone bar.. pretty nice set up which was a good selling point..  being a carpenters son though, i allready was looking at what walls i could tear down to make  the house bigger, and the garage of course lol.. i want a lift in there..  it's going for 135k but we're gonna try and knock it down some..

another one we looked at in taylor(sp) was really big, pretty far out though.. 5 beds almost 3000 sq feet but it was a repo and they messed it up pretty bad...  felt like too much of a hassle to start off with.. others here and there we good but we're going to try and get #1... always go for the house that makes you say "oooo"...  just gotta see how long it'll be before we move now..

cokey > Good luck. Hope you find something you like.
But like IZ said, no 140K with an Austin addy. I paid 124K for a 2-1 in central Austin 4 YEARS ago. But again, good luck and welcome to central Texas.

You and the s/o could always try the temp office at UT.  You MAY be able to slide into a position if they really like you.  Be prepared though, Austin is a very cool place.  Everyone wants to be there!  The employers know this so they don't pay you sh*t.  Some of the lowest wages in the state.  I was getting paid a decent wage in Lake Travis.  The health job..not so competitive though as opposed to the rest of TX or like here in PHX.  I really do miss Austin but low wages along with high property taxes (that are going to be raised again) just wasn't worth it to me.

Getting back to the UT suggestion.  When my wife was leaving her job..they had over 350 applicants wanting her position.

Kind of o/t, but dang IZ, I didn't know you left LT already.  Where to you call home now?

Cokey,  I lived in Cedar Park back in the late 90s.  It's OK.  Fairly easy commute to Austin now that there is the toll road.  I moved away from Austin for a few years, missed it and moved back.  I almost moved back to Cedar Park again, but after renting a house there for a while, I decided I didn't really like it anymore.  Since we always seemed to hang out at the lake, we decided why not just live there, so I bought a house in a small lake-front community just west of Bee Cave.  Since I'm not in the city limits, my taxes aren't all that bad.

By the way, there is also a Cedar Creek in the area - it's east of Austin.

Bee Caves is out by Lakeway/Lake Travis area.  My address was messed up.  It was an Austin address but I lived past Bee Caves and across the street was Lakeway.   Huh?

BTW..not sure if I read your response right but there are no tolls going from Bee Caves/Lakeway into Austin.  Very nice ride..pretty..especially on foggy mornings!  Riding the bike into town though..  waytogo  There were 3 ways to take and all of them had nice, long, sweeping roads.

Scooby..yeah, left over a month ago.  Currently, in Tempe.
